VHS to PC with HuffyUV to MPEG2 4:2:2
 
Hi,
after taking the TBC TV One 1T-TBC-GL from Lordsmurf, and selling the Canopus ADV-300 I recovered an ATI AIW 9000 (with Theater 200 chip) and made a dedicated clean pc with WIN XP SP2 and ATI drivers.
So now the final flow has been improved and is:

UPS -> Panasonic NV-FS200 -> S-VIDEO Cable -> TBC TV One 1T-TBC-GL -> S-VIDEO Cable -> ATI AIW 9000 -> VDub with HuffyUV codec
-> RCA AUDIO Cable to JACK -> PC AUDIO CARD

I would like to keep my interlaced VHS videos in MPEG2 4:2:2 format for archive and I would not want to increase the resolution
in the passages.
The acquisition is done at 720x576
After I mask in VirtualDub in 4x3 auto letterbox and I'm always at 720x576

But then how is it better to resize while retaining the interlacing to create a 4:2:2 MPEG2?
Do I have to increase to 768x576?
I don't want to do that...:unsure:

I guess 720x576 is the DVD AR, it depends where you play the file on…. a hardware media player, or only on your computer/NUC
But since you want code to MPEG2, you could also use a dvd-recorder, and use the VOB's from the discs,
or you could try and use both methodes, to see the difference for yourself.
btw, you don't get lipp sync issues, using the soundcard for audio ?

The videos will always be played on a pc, I wouldn't need DVDs.
Analyzing everything that is recommended on the forum, and that too
I agree, the need was to maintain these conditions for the videos to be archived:

- mask the dancing edges of the VHS with black
- keep the original interlacing
- keep square pixels (PAR 1: 1)
- maintain a 4:3 ratio (SAR and DAR 4:3)
- that's why stop at the MPEG2 @ 4:2:2 interlaced format with HuffyUV encoding for
archiving.
- From here, possibly do a deinterlacing for a progressive H.264 encoding

It remains for me to understand the intermediate resolutions, the acquisition starts in PAL 720x576 (5:4).

With the audio part I had no problems with sync, the other method would be to put everything in the ATI video card, right? I didn't notice any delays however.

I guess you are already "into" the VirtualDub workings, personally i prefer an video editor like DavinCi Resolve,
and fit the capture within 4:3 no masking with black borders, but that's personal taste, for archiving i would leave the "fringes" on, you might want to have choice what to do in de future.
You could also look for more VCR's to capture from, if your VHS tapes where not recorded on the same vcr throughout the years, different recorders will have different tracking ranges, also if sound is recorded on the HiFi (PCM) track, if only recorded on linear track(s) azimuth will play a role, some vcr's recorded even stereo on the linear track, other vcr's only play mono from the linear track.
I guess the output of the TV One 1T-TBC-GL also does some "work" before capturing, so there are no functions/filters double in use ? this would lower optical resolution….
