VirtualDub encoding files for archive?
 

I have the latest version of Virtual Dub installed and have installed the Huffyuv codec. I also installed Newtek's Codec pack because it has SpeedHQ4:4:4 in it. All I want to do is recompress several AVI Uncompressed files so they take up less drive space to archive. I tried the Huffyuv codec and the files ended up almost the exact same size. I'm not sure which settings to use under Color Depth to do this either. The one that works is the 24 bit RGB888. I can select the 4:4:4 Codec and the 4:4:4 under Color Depth, but that doesn't work. I guess this would be an easy task, if I knew which settings to use. Thanks for any help.

In Virtualdub 1.9.11, I use YUY2 4:2:2 for Color Depth. HuffYuv codec configuration doesn't have much for settings. I've kept the defaults. 4:2:2 (e.g. YUY2 or YV16) vs 4:2:0 (e.g. YV12) color depth has been discussed quite a bit on the forum over the years if you search. I could be mistaken, but I believe HuffYUV is assumed to be YUY2 4:2:2. For Analog Video, it is plenty. See attached pics.

Never use random codecs for archives. That ends badly. Files that cannot be opened in 5,10,etc years. This was a pet peeve in my studio days. Idiots would put master archives into some wacky weird crap that nobody could open. I would sometimes have to perform voodoo to open the things again. At least once, files were rejected, zero way to open.

Stay mainstream.
Huffyuv lossless for SD
FFv1 lossless for HD.
Or compress to MPEG, broadcast depths 4:2:2.

As per above, set I/O both to 4:2:2
