VHS tapes reel degradation, or mold?
2 Attachment(s)
Hello guys,
Wondering if some of you ever came with physical degradation of the reel. At first we thought it was mold strike, but according to the picture it look like the plastic reel is slowly degradating. Have you ever come across something like this? |
The shots are too close to understand what's going on, though it looks like mould or some kind of corrosion, but you can always transfer the tape to another reel.

Yes a wider shot would help for perspective. But also,
1. the shot appears to be overexposed with brighter highlights washed out. I assume the white areas are the focus of interest so they need to be presented properly exposed. 2. There is no indication of color but possibly the tape on the reel is neutral black. Is this a black-and -white photo? If so color would possibly add more important information. |
The tape has mold.
But unlike most mold image you see (which is on tapes that have sat somewhere bad/wrong for decades), these tapes you have were put into a VCR, and the mold was slung arounud the inside of the casette housing. The direction and angle of the spatter looks obvious to me. |

As requested wider pictures view.
What's interesting is that the particules are mosly uneven and solo and located near to reel. A lot of them are not on the tape but on the transparent plastic windows plastic (electrostatic?) The tape 2017 have been play and the is some interference on play back but not necessaly always at the same T time. Meaning at a T time once there could be interference and on the black back, none. |
