VHS capture shadow artifacts?
 

I have RAW capture of old VHS tapes. JVC HR-S9600EU, BEST on, pic control EDIT, 3r on. Passthrough Pioneer DVR-555H because I couldn't get stabilised capture with S-VHS deck only.

I have tried replay with BEST off, 3R off, pic control AUTO...there are no visual changes.

It looks like black shadow, black color leaking. It makes me wonder what the hell is that. It is some color shift of UV channels that can be fixed. Or is it something weird that S-VHS + DVDR combo creates, please?

It might be already worn VHS tape, crap camera 27 years ago. Who knows. Anyone can explain what might be problem, please?

It's called halos, a.k.a oversharpening
Best dehalos filters in avisynth are YAHR, dehalo_alpha, and FixVHSOversharp

There is no postprocessing, it is already on tape.

It was recorded by Video8 camera, and transfered via Composite to VHS. I am betting my friend used to have consumer grade vhs/camera back in 1998.

Then the halos were added at the time or recording. That happened with certain cheap camcorders, or certain wrong settings.

But are the actually the original camcorder tapes? Or just VHS copies? Because that would then mean a re-recording VCR made the halos. And consumer VCRs are notorious for oversharpening, and oversaturating.

Sadly VHS copies. Originals are gone, overwritten. It is sadly already on VHS tape. I will try dehalo, see what happen.

I thought my capture setup is at fault, but even all enhancing features are turned off...artifacts are still there.

That's why then. Likely embedded artifacts from oversharpening from ?>VHS conversion, using typical cheap consumer VCRs that boosted sharpness badly. The ? is because not sure if Hi8, Video8, VHS, VHS-C, etc. Not that it matters now.

Use Avisynth to reduce.

I am seeing these artefacts directly on source 8mm tape from Sony CCD-FX270E camera. It is something similar to photography "chroma aberration" when light bends on edges.

The same goes for some Canon Hi8 crap camera where are same artefacts in scene in concert hall with side windows. It does the same shades on a person playing piano.

I haven't noticed these artefacts coming from Sony CCD-TR728E Hi8 camera.

Either DVDR pass-through does some crap (I have no possibility to play directly from camera yet) or these consumer cameras were set for some picture "enhancing" that create unwanted artefacts.
