s-video input wear and tear?
 

Regarding VHS capture:
I want to avoid the wear and tear that comes with unplugging and re-plugging s-video cables into VCRs and TBCs. This happens to me a lot while trying to figure out which devices work best with certain tapes.

This isn't an issue with my current capture card -- WinTV-HVR950 comes with a detachable A/V input cable that is easily replaceable, so that I can avoid unplugging and re-plugging into the device's little HDMI input. I just keep the a/v cable plugged into the capture card at all times, and there's less risk of wear and tear.

I'm wondering if the same idea can be applied to other parts of the workflow, specifically the s-video connections, since it's easier and cheaper to replace these cables than to repair expensive gear. I've also read some horror stories on this board and elsewhere of the little needles breaking off s-video cables while unplugging and getting stuck inside. I'd prefer to avoid this altogether and just leave the VCR and TBC with the cables always plugged in. This is typically how we used to treat VCRs -- leaving everything plugged in. They're not really built for frequent unplug/re-plug.

So I tried searching for s-video extension cables - male on one side female on the other - which would be ideal (disconnecting 2 short cables from the middle instead of unplugging directly from the devices) except the only ones I can find for sale are over 6 feet. I also considered picking up some female to female s-video converters to keep midway through the connection, but I wonder if this would degrade the signal.

Are there any better options?

Get a S-Video selector box.

I thought of that but I figured they degrade signal.

What evidence do you have that a box degrades the signal? Have you tested this?

No, I was just surprised the answer was a simple one.

Well, they can potentially add noise but with good quality shielded cables you should be fine, I have one if interested.

I found another thread with a similar question. It looks like s-video extension cables are the most efficient option for my needs right now. I just wish I could find any for sale that are shorter than 36 inches.

It sounds like many boxes risk adding noise to the picture, plus from viewing the sizes of some of them I just don't have the space for it.

I use S-video splits but just 6” pigtails. Use one side or the other.
