Vdub histogram vs Pmod waveform monitor
 

I used my histogram in Vdub for capture then when I checked my levels post capture according to the waveform monitor in Pmod I can see where my luma crashes into the clipping circuitry on my card.

I’m wondering if I missed something there. I am going to recapture that anyways because the audio was awful so I have a Mackie mix 8 on its way thanks to the recommendation by LS. I’ll recheck the video levels in Vdub when I recapture.

Hmm. I hadn't heard about using an equalizer like the Mix8. I always thought the recommended way to go about audio capture was to capture "as is" and then apply filters later as opposed to filtering with an equalizer or similar first. For one step applications where you know there won't be frequencies above a certain level, I could see using something like a 24 or 30 band equalizer and turning down everything above a certain frequency. The Mix8 doesn't seem to have much in the way of fine control over specific frequencies though - looks like basically a 3 band equalizer. Could be I'm missing the point of putting it in the chain though. If it's just for gain control, usually you'd just lower the input level on the sound card I think.

My audio was really low and when I tried to raise it with my capture card it brought up my noise floor. I don't have an audio sample of before I raised the audio in my card but here's one of after. I was told that part of the video was shot by a hired professional. It's in Hawaii and I know they like to screw over the tourist so maybe they're a professional. Anyways I'm guessing the volume wasn't recorded really low like that.

You can control your lows, mids, and highs. That's probably all you need for this. From everything I've seen online it's really low noise.

Can we change the title of this thread to Mixer for quiet noisy audio or something like that since it’s still the beginning of the thread? If I have something to ask later about histograms and waveform monitors later then I’ll just make another thread.

With the histogram I am just going to check it post capture and not try to go so close to the edges of the histogram. I’ll check it during editing too because I know some filters can expand it to illegal values.
