Capture order with JVC VCR, Pioneer DVR, TBC-1000?
 

Hi guys. I finally managed to get my NTSC tapes to record after I went the "hacky" route and passed the signal through a Pioneer DVR-545HX.

My question now is regarding the optimal capture chain order and particularly what role the TBC-1000 plays - if any in this setup.

So I have this right now for NTSC tapes:
JVC HR-S7611 --> Pioneer DVR-545HX --> TBC-1000 --> ATI AIW 9600 + Turtle Beach for audio.
Software is Virtual Dub 1.9.11

My questions are two:
* If the TBC-1000 should be placed between JVC and DVR and if I could maybe get an explanation as to why/why not.
* The build in line TBC on the JVC I find that I have to leave off for some tapes otherwise the image starts to jump a bit. I think I read different places that it can vary from tape to tape in the TBC on the VHS should be off or on - correct? or is something else at play.

JVC VCR has line TBC

Offhand, I'm not aware of that exact Pioneer DVD recorder containing any TBC. Even if it did, it would only be line, and likely have image degradations like all the other known DVD recorders. It's a DVD recorder, not a TBC. 99% of DVD recorders lack and TBC and/or passthrough, merely able to make DVDs (and only suggested for off-air analog, not from videotapes).

The DataVideo TBC-1000 is a frame TBC. Frame is not line. Frame prevents dropped frames, audio sync issues, some other aspects corrected.

The 1st line TBC in a chain wins.
- So if JVC TBC on, DVD recorder does nothing.
- If JVC TBC off, then DVD recorders uses line (assuming model has that passthrough TBC function, which again 99% do not). The only reason for certain ES10/15 type DVD recorders is for anti-tearing, not full-time in chain, with the quality JVC VCR.

A TBC "jumping" is actually often misalignment related, and a deck realign will correct most jumping / (layman) jitter. The other cause is line length errors at top of frame, and is a type of tearing for ES10/15 type. Some Panasonic field fixed this, sometimes not.

Thanks lordsmurf. As you also noticed in the other thread, the DVR is not for TBC but for PAL60-->NTSC workaround. I do not believe it has any TBC function.

Knowing that, where would you place the TBC-1000 in the chain? Before or after the DVR?
