Any suggestions for capture PC build?
 

I'm thinking about building a PC for VHS capture.

What I have so far:

* Cooler Master RC-912-KKN1 case
* RM1000x power supply
* Supermicro X10SRA-F board (my preliminary research seems to indicate that this is capable of running XP)
* Samsung 850 EVO SSD, access to many more of these with different storage capacities
* Not sure of the graphics card currently inside

I'll be digitizing 10-20 VHS tapes. I have two goals:

1.) a capture that is as close to the original video as possible

2.) a de-interlaced, 59.9 fps & upscaled version that looks as good as possible.

Any suggestions for other components (capture cards, in particular) would be appreciated.

That's a good choice of PSU. But you can shave down some bucks to the RM850x, and it still probably has more power than needed. For me, the #1 concern was fan noise, and the lower heat of the 850 vs. 1000 kept that to a minimum. The PSU fan rarely runs, even in summer.

EVO is fine, just be sure it has a good firmware. And then you need two drives, one for OS, another for the actual captures. I have 250gb SSDs for OS, and 2tb (XP) or 4tb (Win7) EVO/CrucialMX SSDs for captures. If using XP, be aware that SSD install requires custom settings, at least a dozen of them. For many USB cards, Win7 is also excellent, XP is mostly for AIW builds.

Supermicro X10SRA-F is insane overkill, probably costly. There are several Gigabyte and Asrock boards that are considered best for building out AIW capture boxes.

If you want "the best", then that is indeed certain AGP AIW capture+graphics cards (also PCI and USB, which give even more choices in hardware builds).

That case is fine, but I prefer N200 for microATX builds.

Are you planning to build a system for long-term use (beyond capturing)? If so, let's explore specs. If not, then I know of some ways to cut costs with too much compromise. For example, a certain $20-30 PSI instead of $100-130.

RAM not too important, just decent and 4gb+

Graphics not too important either, and AIW includes graphics if making on of those builds.

I don’t mean to frown on your proposed setup, but I’ve been using a lame refurbished Lenovo Thinkpad running W7x64 with
a P360 2.3Ghz dual core. I use ATI clones including Tevions and never (almost) drop frames.
Unless a card demands XP it just seems so much easier to get a 7 lappy second hand and focus on other things.
I humbly await my utter destruction…

For daily us, that would drive me insane. But for 10-20 tapes, decent, aces even.

Looking at his other thread, it's more clear now that he already owns the above parts, it's not just something he can get. So the main focus is probably the OS and capture card, not so much the mobo/CPU, and RAM/graphics not really important (just need to be present, obviously).

So now it's just time to build it (and they will come? :laugh:)
