Hi All, I'm on my 3rd reboot of my VHS capture project since I first started reading posts on this Forum in 2018. Hopefully this time I'll keep it going. Fortunately all the pieces of my workflow (ATI 600 USB, AG-1980, HR-S9800, TBC-3000, Lenovo T500 XP laptop) appear to be working good! I've even added a Cyberpower UPS to protect everything (LS rec) and replaced the TBC3000 power supply (which was causing herringbone).

Even though I've worked with everything from DOS and OS2 to today I just can't stand working with XP. As luck would have it I have the WinTV 2250 card (PCI-e) and a friends 2012 Windows 7 PC (HP Pavilion p7-1232 running W10) which has a PCI-e slot. So I wanted to see just for fun how it would work with VDUB. To my amazement it seems to work perfectly and the ATI 600 USB, as warned, does not.

I'm not looking to start a war on this topic but I wanted to post here that maybe, just maybe this combination could be a good solution for folks who don't want to deal with XP or when the 600's are all gone.

My simple test is shown in the attached screen shots and I may find issues eventually.

1. VHS NTSC Broadcast capture with VDUB - 0 frames dropped, 0 frames inserted with the 2250. The ATI 600 was terrible with jumping video and lots of inserts (although rock solid on XP).

2. Histogram on (Preview required) shows levels below 16 - which I assume means it doesn't cut off at 16 like the ATI 600. I assume that means blacker blacks should be possible with the 2250? Also, in the screen shots I let the levels go into the red just to show it better. I know to stay within 16-235 and crop/matte.

I'm open to suggestions of what else I should be looking for, as far as what might not work in W10, as I don't pretend to be an expert in any way at this. I did get HuffYUV working as you can see from the capture filesize thanks to a LS post, thank you for that!

I'm double checking my VirtualDub settings before my first capture (still hoping to use the WinTV card with W10) and found what might be a problem. I can "set custom video format" to 720x480 YUY2. But when I go to "Capture pin" the Output Size has only 352x288 (default). The dropdown menu gives no other choices. However if I do an AVI capture and open it in GSpot it says the capture is 720x480. The ATI 600 of course doesn't have this problem. My question, is it OK to have it set in "custom video format" even though "Capture pin" doesn't have the 720x480? It seems it's doing 720x480 anyway. Of course I'm looking for the best quality capture. Screen shots are attached.

Wow, 73 views. I didn't think anyone would care about this topic. So, in case someone reads this later on I'd like to close this topic out with a few thoughts... I really liked running in W10 with the Hauppauge 2250 card (and the ability to network to my W11 "server" and the full 0-255 histogram) but I'm not experienced enough to trust the capture is really 720x480 (see previous comments) and so I have moved back to the XP laptop and ATI 600 USB card. I think I've gotten the hang of adjusting the TBC-3000 (16-235) while watching the VirtualDub histogram before capturing (with borders cropped), setting VirtualDub correctly so it captures without dropped or inserted frames and using Huffyuv to reduce the AVI filesize. Once I make some progress on capturing a few VHS tapes then I'll consider how much post processing and in what tool to do it whether Avisynth, Hybrid or maybe something I haven't yet discovered (suggestions?). But for now, capture, capture, capture and enjoy discovering what I find on old tapes of mine, my father-in-laws and my wife. I also have a few thrift shop tapes labeled "shows" with which I will proceed with great caution (in the cheap Sony at first). My interest being NTSC broadcast TV commercials, shows, news breaks and station ID's. Most of my tapes are 1990's with a few mid 80's. The older the better. And just for fun, a picture of my workflow as I capture (one of my father-in-laws) Tyson vs. Holmes HBO fights from Jan. 22, 1988. Fortunately recorded at LP not EP. Thanks Dad!
