DMR-ES10 good for Macrovision?
Hi, I have a Blaupunkt RTV-925 EGC and the Panasonic DVD Recorder DMR-ES10 for passthrough. I want to digitalize my VHS movies and I'm going to buy a Canopus 110 and a firewire board for my windows 11 pc. Does the DMR-ES10 fix the macrovision problem?
Is the Canopus110 working with a common firewire port bought from amazon and windows 11 pc? I'm pretty new to this world but I love VHS format and I don't want to lose my movies and my family memories. Do you think this is a good quality setup? |
No, the only way, I think, to get past MV is with a capture device that ignores it (i.e. Tevion) or external TBC. Some devices such as a GREX, my reading tells me it will/might work but with nasssty side effects.

It’s a TBC only in the narrowest of definitions. You need to investigate the forum and certainly members will explain further why the ES-10 and 15 are very useful tools, but not really TBCs.

The ADVC-110 can't get past macrovision, they got rid of the "feature" with that model. The ADVC-100 works with macrovision though - basically it's some well known button press pattern that can be Googled. Main other difference in the ADVC-100 is that it can't be powered by the firewire bus, so it requires an AC adapter, which I think most people tend to use anyway with the 110.
Standalone boxes can also remove macrovision, though the only one that I know of that does it with S-Video is the Sima Copymaster. Lastly, there are boxes like the Cloner alliance products that don't care about macrovision either, but those do hardware deinterlacing which isn't ideal, but probably better than nothing if you can't find a different solution. There shouldn't be any macrovision on your family home movies though, so if that's all you are digitizing, then really nothing to worry about. |

Nothing is ever "removed", just partially/sorta-kinda ignored. Sime CopyMaster was infamous at the time. Cypress owned Sima, and it was a far cry from Cypress frame TBCs. It wasn't the same whatsoever. These items were meant for VHS>VHS work, not VHS>digital. Big difference. Quote:

BTW, on the opposite spectrum, the Grex devices are also junk for VHS>digital. But, fun fact, those work perfectly for digital>digital or digital>VHS. The only way to truly and fully remove anti-copy (or which Macrovision is just one brand of it) -- and I mean truly, fully remove -- is to use a frame TBC. Those entirely obliterate that portion of the signal, and replace it with a proper clean to-spec signal. (Well, 99%+ of the time, there's always some % of tapes that were just outright damaged by anti-copy, signals are too entangled.) Macrovision suggests retail/commercial, not home movies. This is why the best advice is to: - Buy a frame TBC for your DIY/hobby conversion. - Buy the retail release that is already digital (DVD, Blu-ray). - Watch it on streaming. - Find somebody that has a TBC (and good VCR, and good capture card), and is willing to help you transfer. Such as fellow collector of whatever that show/movie/genre is. (Example: in years past, I helped out some fellow toon collectors.) - Consider that you're late to the party, now the 2020s, and somebody has already likely transferred that retail tape. You simply need to find who and where. |
Everything arrived and I can say that my ADVC-110 can bypass MV by itself holding the button on the front. So no problem!!!

Could be you have one of the earlier versions of ADVC-110 that will still allow macrovision bypass - I haven't really tested it in depth myself on macrovision, just going based on what others have said. The ADVC-100 should always work as it is slightly older and I'm told the main difference is just that it requires an AC adapter whereas the 110 can be firewire-bus powered.

Other than that, the ES10 will "work fine" with Macrovision, in the sense that it will not prevent you from passing the signal through and getting some Line TBC-ish clean up effect, now I am not sure if the fact that a tape has MV makes the correction worse, but usually in a workflow the ES10 comes before the Frame tbc that removes macrovision so I think it should be ok. I have used these 2 : - JVC VCR with MV Tape -> ES 10-> Capture Card (Pinnacle 510/ATI 600, etc) - JVC VCR with MV Tape -> ES 10-> TBC-1000 -> Capture Card (Pinnacle 510/ATI 600, etc) Both work fine most of the time. |
