JVC HR-DVS3SU not producing audio?
I recently got a JVC HR-DVS3SU DV/SVHS deck for dubs off Ebay. For some reason I get no audio. I've tried every audio setting (norm, norm/hifi, hifi, hifi-L, hifi-R) as well as 3 different outputs (2 different rows of RCA outputs on back, DV output on the front). I haven't tried coax yet, or coax to RCA or anything like that, though I did try RCA to a TV with no luck. These are the same type news archive tapes I've successfully dubbed using a Magnavox SVHS deck and a JVC HRS7800U, so it's not the tapes. I could see how a physical issue might cause a problem with the RCA outputs, but would it stifle the DV output as well?
The seller is on standby while I try troubleshooting before we resort to a return. |
Common issue, common return. Lots of these units were abused. You see many of these listed as "parts or not working" with the "no audio" symptom. Offhand, I forget what the reason(s) are, but it's usually a deep repair.
This assumes it's not user error, plugging cables into the wrong outputs. |
I think I tried all RCA ports available, output AND input, in case I was in bizarro-land for some reason. [:p]
The guy says he thinks he has another he can send, so I may try that...though I'd want him to check the RCA ports first! Of course, he SAYS he DID test this one before sending and it worked, so... |

I know who many of them are, and some are real shysters. Some of those guys even threaten buyers, and find ways to scrub their feedback of the deserved negatives. (The biggest POS, by far, is "Tracktown Treasures" in Oregon. You should read his Google reviews, Yelp reviews, etc, and not just the eBay feedback. Definitely read his eBay responses to his buyers. That dude is not right in the head. Thankfully, that slimeball rarely sells anything we'd want at this site.) Quote:

Well, if he doesn't make you send that one back to exchange for the other he's going to send, I could potentially refurb it for a fee, or if I'm not successful, I wouldn't charge anything and keep for parts. I haven't specifically seen one with no audio output, but it'd be an interesting challenge. PM me if interested.

I'm waiting to see what he wants to do; I've told him all troubleshooting has failed to produce any results.
On another note, since the cover/door to the tape part wasn't secured, some of the packing peanuts got inside the unit during transit. I took the cover off to remove them before I tested it. I don't suppose there's a chance a packing peanut could have had enough weight to knock anything loose? SURELY not! |
