I read there were hacks for the R120 but can't seem to find them here, do you know if the hacks exist?

What sort of hacks?
  • Region-free?
  • Ignore Macrovision/anti-copy?
  • Something else?

Ignore Macrovision would be nice and to turn it region free I would not pass up!

Try this for region-free:

Quote:

  1. Without disk in unit, press '0' five times.
  2. Press 'Repeat'
  3. Press 2, 9, 3, 3, 4
  4. "1" (current region code) appears onscreen
  5. Press '9' for all regions, "1" will change to "9"
  6. Press 'Open' 'Close' to save

That works on the Samsung R100.

Not much use in converting a player to region-free unless you have a lot of foreign official releases. Remember that copies and homemade discs usually won't have regions.

I don't see an anti-copy or Macrovision hack anywhere. You'll have to rely on a TBC or possibly a cheap "copy remover" device.

Thanks
Besides the LiteOn/clones (that has the macrovision hack) are there any other dvd recorders with the LSI chipset that either doesn't have macrovision or has a hack or not real sensitive to it?

All DVD recorders look for and will detect (and falsely detect!) anti-copy signals from input sources, such as Macrovision.

Most of them are sensitive.
A good list of LSI-based DVD recorders can be found at http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/show...pset-1558.html

It's not complete -- some JVC and LiteOn models are missing -- but it's pretty accurate for other brands.

Note that having LSI alone doesn't make it a good machine. Some machines, like the Panasonic ES20, were stocked with an LSI, but the settings used by the deck were terrible. LG was like this on most models. The Polaroid was nasty, too. Apex and Ellion looked okay, but had other major issues with the units.

Look for Zenith hacks, for the LSI models on that list. Some friends of mine had used the Zenith decks, and I believe there were some hacks available. Again, having to recall 4-5+ years ago, memory a bit fuzzy that far back, this specific.

Thanks
I just got a used Samsung R-120, a backup to the LiteOn....hope it's not overly sensitive to macrovision and I gather I will get a better DVD recording from vhs than my Panasonic DVD recorder.
