HM-DC30000U - settings / TBC?
 

with my AG-1980 f-ing up i was trolling the Craplist for a JVC and found a mint HM-DC30000U for a paltry $50 - i know these have mixed reviews, but it was so cheap i took a chance

ive been toying with settings, but the manual makes no mention of a TBC
i thought these had a TBC. if so how do i turn it on/off?

it does have:
V.Calibration
Picture control
Digital R3
Video Stabilizer
3DNR

what should i set these at for capture?

is the i.link / firewire port of any use for capture?

I don't believe you can turn off the TBC in either the 30000 or 40000 units -- it's an always on kinda deal.

Give us your impressions of the deck, I'm always looking at them but have never pulled the trigger.

The settings suggested for the D-VHS are the same as the S-VHS.

Note that the page needs updates still, one of which is advice to keep Calibration turned off in almost all circumstances.

The Firewire is probably useful for something. One of my friends has this deck, and then several digitalFAQ.com forum members do, too. We've all discussed it in the past, but not owning one myself, it's somewhat foggy of a memory. You'd do best to search the forum, either with a basic/Google or advanced/vB search. Try both.

i did not like the 30000
picture was blurry compared to the AG-1980 and it had alot of smearing
the loading/ejecting of the tape felt weak and cheap
turning on the Video Stabilizer made the picture jump around vertically like a Mexican jumping bean (isnt that what it is supposed to fix:confused:)
i threw it on ebay with a $200 buy it now and it sold quickly.
after fees and gas to fetch the 30000 i made a little over $100 - not too bad
i just bought a SR-V101US for $64 shipped - so that will be the next try
maybe i can keep trading up till i have a 9600 or a W5U[:)]

Interesting! I'll be curious to hear what you think of the SR-V101US. It is certainly a lightweight deck, but feels fairly solid overall. I've found it to be a good performer, especially on very noisy tapes, although you may or may not like the amount of NR applied on SP commercial masters, but you can always try it in edit mode on tapes that you think are too soft otherwise.

I'll be curious to hear if the video stabilization is necessary for you and whether or not it behaves differently. The only things I really don't like about my SR-V101US is the absence of a TBC toggle button on the front (it's only accessible from the menus) and the quality of the linear audio playback in comparison to linear audio playback in other VCRs, it's quite paltry in comparison.
