JVC SR-MV50US S-VHS / DVD combo
 

does anyone have any experience with the SR-MV50US.
i know it has a TBC - but is it 2mb or 4mb?
is the DVD recorder portion any good?

They are really good units, but don't overpay for it.

In essence they are a combo of the excellent JVC DR-M100S DVD recorder paired with the very solid JVC SR-V101US SVHS player. The VCR has 2MB of RAM for the TBC.

Originally they sold for like $1200 though, which is not worth it, as even brand new those other two individual units could be purchased for around $600 total for the set.

how does the SR-MV50US and SR-V101US compare to a HR-S7900U?
i noticed the SR-V101US isnt in bold on the list but the HR-S7900U is
but was reading elsewhere the V10 and V101 where a continuation of the 7000 series

7900 = SR-V10
SR-V101 = slightly cheaper-made successor to the SR-V10
The 9911 is an equivalent to the SR-101 in the same way that the 7900 is lesser version of 9900.

I believe the transport is the major difference.

Much of this has been discussed in past posts, by myself and several other forum regulars. (It may take some searching time to find them all.)
I sometimes forget things as time goes by, so I'd also have to refer to my own past posts.

I never owned the 7900, but I did own a 7600 at the same time as a SR-V101 and I'd say it compares very favorably with the 7600. Basically identical performance.

At some point, comparing the minutia between specific JVC S-VHS VCRs is nitpicking. From a normal usage point of view, there's not really any difference in any of the models mentioned thus far in this post. The 7600, 7900, 9900, SRV10, SRV101, MV50, as well as others not mentioned, are going to perform the same. Don't bypass or avoid a good "non-bolded" model that's available for a good price (or available, period!) in the largely useless quest for the perfect "bold" models.

Bolding is more for reference and comparison than a difference between good and bad. All of the are good.

so i picked up the sr-mv50 on the cheap.
the VCR works perfect - looks like they didnt use the VCR much.
the DVD recorder burns and plays burned DVD's no problem.
however if you play a commercial pressed DVD the picture is all garbled (sound is fine)
not a super big deal as im more interested on the VCR part

just for the hell of it i used the VCR>DVD dubbing feature on a S-VHS tape and it came out pretty decent.
better than i expected for not using an external TBC / proc amp.

Hmmm interesting. Typically when the burners on these drives start going out, they first stop being able to play/record on DVD RW media, then -R/+R media, and finally they no longer play commercial discs -- so you have the opposite arrangement at the moment. Did you try more than one commercial disc?

i tired half a dozen commercial DVDs
new stuff old stuff - doesnt matter
get garbled slightly diagonal lines

but every burned disk plays fine and it will burn fine too
really weird
i wonder if it is something to do with copy-protection

even more weirdness:
i have 2 "B" movies that work, but i figure they are cheap and may be factory burned disks
then i popped in Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and it played perfect - No way that is a burned disk

OK... well i hooked it directly to a TV (was on my ATI600USB before) and it works perfect with all DVD's.
thats kinda strange- so there is apparently an incompatibility with these 2 units.

There is likely some issue going on with mistaken copy protection -- an actual video error was mistaken for "copy protection" (an artificial video error).

Honestly, you shouldn't waste a recorder's lifespan by treating it like a DVD player. If you need a player, get a cheap player from Amazon.com or Walmart. Better yet, get a Samsung Blu-ray player -- the BD-D5700 is awesome, and only $100-ish shipped from Amazon.

yes - i also believe it was a copy-protection issue.

i do use my PS3 to watch DVD's and Blu-rays.
i was just testing out the SR-MV50 to make sure it didnt have any problems.
