i've read your guides elsewhere and you state that the ati's own software is best for using to record video/tv.

do you still stand by this statement?

however, i can't seem to get a 720x576 setting on the catalyst software for AVIs.

as for the mpeg option, i believe catalyst is using the hardware on the AIW card? no way for me to tweak?

can you point me towards a guide/web site with more details about how to use catalyst better/with more oprions?

What version is it?
The CATALYST, and the MMC.

mmc is 8.71, catalyst not sure.

however, i've read your doodah from elsewhere and have downloaded mmc 9.02 & catalyst 4.8.

Can you use 704x576 ?
That is truer to the card specs anyway,
and was a change made in recent times.

Since it's AVI, I actually use a lot of 640x480 myself.

okay, here's my lack of knowledge reaering its ugly head again!

so, if i want to capture vhs or tv and then cut to dvd later, its okay for me to use 640x480 AVI? bear in mind i'm in the UK, so have to use PAL and dvd standard is 720x576 isn't it?

please advice me o' great one...

Have you installed an avi codec (assuming you'd want to compress a little)?

Also the default settings for capture in the software are bobbins. You have to either edit an existing profile or create a new one; i think in latter versions you can only edit although LS can confirm that one.

Why are you capturing avi? Are you planning on doing alot of filtering and editing? If not you might as well cap straight to mpeg-2.

640x480 is a true 4:3 ratio but you can use 720x576 if you want for PAL. I tend to use half D1 myself which is 352x576. Make sure you cap interlaced too!

I am in the uk and have the 9800 ati and have had no problems.

i have Huffyuv installed. yes i can capture at say 704x576.

i'm just not sure whether 704x576 (or 640x480) is good enough to later cut to a dvd "standard" of 720x576.

mmc avi "default" settings don't allow 720x576.

straight to mpeg2 ... fine ... but what sort of compression/filtering does mmc use? can't seem to tweak these.

704x576 is full D1 too, and the ATI card chip is actually 704 native size, not 720, which is part of the reason it was removed.

704x576 is a valid DVD MPEG-2 resolution

MPEG-2 has no codecs, it's the compression style (MPEG-2), and ATI Theatre/MMC is a hybrid hardware/software based on Ligos tech (excellent MPEG tech to be based on)

MMC, if you want to filter, has both proc amp controls (color, hue, brightness, contrast, etc), as well as the VIDEOSOAP (in ATI MMC 8.x and 9.x) which can remove some noise ... usually should not be used, but despeckle of 17% is useful for most VHS tapes, or combo1 at 80% is useful for noisy degraded signals

You tv, vhs sources are all at or under 352x576, so 352x576 is quite adequate for capturing ... 720/704 is overkill

There is nothing "standard" about 720x480, it is merely one of many choices you have, and is often used by official releases ONLY because they have studio film source that is scanned native to a high res ... what you get on tv or a vidoe tape is far far lower quality and res
