Scrambled recording on a D8/Hi8 tape?

I'm at a loss, there is this cassette with first hour D8 capture-recordings, then the last part of the cassette it switches to Hi8 recording from TV or VCR, not sure which. Anyways, the video gets scrambled on the pc (plays fine on the camera), when trying to transfer with firewire, it even gets scrambled when i try to transfer it from S-video or composite to another camera, then with firewire to PC, and it gets scrambled when trying to capture with USB-device.
But, on tv it plays fine both with s-video and composite.

Is this some strange piracy protection? how can I override it?

With regards.

what do you mean by scrambled? screenshot?

like totally scrambled, sound all strange like, and impossible to understand the picture. First time I encountered it, and its the same on a second cassette from the same source. First digital8 and then Hi8-vcr/tv recording in the end.

could this be a PAL to NTSC issue?

knumag 06-01-2014 01:04 PM

Isn't it strange it plays on a pal camera then, ie I can watch it clearly when S-video out directly to tv or on the lcd screen of the camera. Only when trying to capture it, it gets scrambled. I'll post a screen shot or upload a clip from it soon.

Weiiiiird. I'm also guessing some sort of PAL/NTSC issue.

The analog output may be PAL60. That would explain why you can watch the S-Video output on your TV but not your USB capture device. What is your USB stick?

Yep, msgohan is probably right. :)

You're playing PAL 60. The TV converts the NTSC color to PAL, but with a NTSC framerate. However, your capture device does not understand this. When it comes to capturing tapes, you often needs NTSC equipment to play NTSC tapes.

I've never heard of a Hi8/DV camera that could play NTSC at all. Usually this was a VHS only issue. So it's the main reason I'm not entirely confident that this is the problem. It seems as if it is, but not 100% sure here.

It is really strange, if it is an ntsc-pal error, it shouldnt play at all right (my camera only supports pal as i am aware of (trv230E)? there really shouldnt be any ntsc recordings here in norway anyways. As i said, it plays fine on the camera lcd screen, sound is also perfect. On tv with s-video or composite also perfect, but when connected to my dazzle, i even get bluescreen, it totally freezes and when transferring trough dv, its like that (on the clip), and when transferring trough s-video (or composite) to mini-dv camera (passtrough) to computer with firewire I get blank screen... I don't understand this, gonna try with dr-m10 as passtrough when I get it, maybe it solves the issue..

And as I said, right before the recording on the same cassettes, there's regular D8 camera recordings, and it switches over to this Hi8 movie recording. Camera has been tested for Hi8 cassettes a couple of weeks ago, so no problem there. The Digital8 recordings in the beginning of the tape transfers without problems.

Are there any piracy protection on Hi8/D8? Because this is a movie recording... Thought maybe that was the issue, since it plays fine when its obviously playback, but kind of encrypted when capturing.

Some Sony PAL equipment will play analog NTSC recordings, your camcorder is one of them. Check the menus on your camcorder for an option called "NTSC PB", by default it is likely set to "PAL TV", try setting it to "NTSC 4.43", which may be more friendly to your capture card. Many have the option to capture the NTSC 4.43 "quasi-standard" signal.

See page 110.

It does seem odd that NTSC recordings (particularly analog ones) are appearing on a tape in Norway. Perhaps the tapes were purchased second hand and reused?
