Video error - lines in VHS/Betamax transfers?

2 Attachment(s)
Hello,
I am ripping from various sources - VHS, Beta, etc - onto a Panasonic DVD recorder. When I dump these down into files I can upload on YouTube I use Handbrake, however I am getting these jagged lines in all my videos (see attachement). Usually when there is motion.
I seem to recall this is a common problem... framerate? Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Offhand, looks like your sources are telecined. Deinterlacing won't work.

You're using the wrong terms, and it only leads to confusion. "Ripping" is extracting already-digital content from a disc to a non-disc. This isn't ripping. You can't "rip" a tape. This is capturing analog to digital. It may seem anal to some, but it does matter.

This part is the "ripping" -- extracting a DVD recorder discs to your computer hard drive.

It's not a problem. The source video is interlaced, made for a TV. To use it on a streaming site like Youtube, it needs to be progressive. To make interlaced video progressive, you deinterlace it. However, choose your deinterlace method carefully. Most software uses a simple drop-field method, which creates a video with jaggies. The ideal way to deinterlace is by using QTGMC in Avisynth.

FYI: The slider is currently broken on the second page; we're fixing it.

No. It's just interlacing from VHS source.

oops. The O.P. mentioned uploading to UTube, so I figured he told Handbrake to make it progressive. My bad.
