Done with wasting my time trying to capture VHS with a low budget VCR!

I'm done with wasting my time and countless hours trying to capture VHS with a low budget VCR. I don't need to go into hardware and software issues, unless needed. I have spent hours reading your fourm and others and I believe I have good hardware and software.
I'm ready to take the next serious step and buy a good JVC VCR with TBC.
Your finest recommendations are welcome :)

JVC HR-S9600
JVC HR-S9800
JVC HR-S9900
JVC HR-S9911
JVC HR-S7600 < with TBC, don't get non-TBC model
JVC HR-S7800
JVC HR-S7900
JVC SR-V10U

Get yourself one of these. Once you get it, you'll wonder why you wasted time on cheap VHS VCRs. That's how I felt the very first day I owned mine, and it has NEVER changed.

Recently eCOST.com has has some refurbs cheap, as well as new ones one sale. B&H bhphotovideo.com always has some. I used to have some for sale, but my supplier sold out, so I no longer carry any. eBay has some too, just be careful of the sellers (only buy from established sellers with more than 100 feedback and almost no negatives to be safe, and pay with Paypal funded by credit card).

Thanks Lordy....
I'm a having somewhat difficult time deciding on which JVC to grab. Should I empty the bank on a HR-S9600, or maybe look deeper into the specs?
My main goal is to capture old VHS tapes with the maximum quality via MMC8.7. BTW..... MMC9.1 :)
Too bad you don't have any to sell at this moment.
Just think, when I get one of these, I will bug you for tweaks on the JVC!

I'm on ATI MMC 9.0 here. Did it when I reformatted last month. Works fine. No WMV drops for once.

The 9600, 9800 and 9900 are what I consider the most perfect models made. I have a 9800 myself.

jrnyhead 07-05-2004 08:28 AM

If you had only two to choose from:
HR-S9900U
HR-S9911U
Which one and why?

admin 07-05-2004 08:27 PM

The 9900 because it's not as plastic and is more user-friendly on the controls. The 9600-9900 have a better track record of lasting.

It's also not ugly like the 9911, but that's not an important reason. :)

I have searched everywhere on the web for the other models, including your recommendations, and I can only find the JVC HR-9911U for sale at this time.
Any other clues?

It's discontinued. You'll probably have to settle for the 9911, which is still not bad. Just not quite as good as older ones. Of course, older ones were $500 or more back in the day. The newer 9911 are much cheaper.

Hey Lordsmurf,
I just revieved my new JVC HR-S9911U today :)
I can not wait until I have the time to see how well this baby performs. I will send a post in a few days

It's been more than 5 years, and you're still a site member. So I wanted to ask -- how did your projects go?
It's always nice to hear follow-ups.

Best machine to transfer vhs to your computer.

Now that we're in 2012, what would be your top choices today? Please and thank you.

The best VCRs were all made in the mid/late 1990s and early 2000s. So nothing has really changed between 2004 and 2012. What was true then is true now, in terms of the best VCRs. The VCR Buyer Guide is regularly maintained and updated. The same can be said for most preferred capture cards, TBCs and other filter devices (proc amps, detailers, mixers, etc). Analog video is an extremely mature area, and has been so for more than a decade now. What comes as an irony is that most analog gear made after 2006 is complete crap, because it's almost exclusively low-cost Chinese consumer hardware, and largely lacking in image quality.

A "sticky" is a forum term. It's a thread "stuck" (pinned, highlighted, etc) to the top of a forum. Forum mods and admins do this in order to help address common questions, as well as pin rules/info to the top of a forum. In the image below, I drew a box around the stickies, which are always highlighted in yellow. I drew an arrow to the sticky in question. At the digitalFAQ.com forum, our stickies have yellow highlights and blue (i) icons.

The sticky is here: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vide...ing-guide.html
