Converting SVHS videos and later SVHS decks

I need to convert about 13 family SVHS tapes to digital. I'm trying to get the best quality possible from them.

I've gone through almost all JVC SVHS machines from '87 to '04 and have narrowed down my best to the following:

JVC HR S7500U
JVC HR S9500U
JVC HR S9911U
JVC SR V101US

I compare the decks using a color bar that I've recorded off a Pioneer Reference Alignment LaserDisc from my CLD 97.

From what I can see, the 7500 and 9500 are virtually indistinguishable. However, when comparing both machines to the 9911U, the colors seem faded on the 7500 and 9500.

When comparing the 911U to the V101US, I could tell that the colors were more vibrant with the 9911U. However, with the 9911U, I did notice a tad bit of color bleeding which the V101US didn't have. So, the V101US had a softer picture to the 9911U. Adjusting the Picture control didn't seem to make much of a change.

What I'd like to know is out of these decks, is the 9911U the best deck to convert my tapes to digital or would it be best to look for the other high end JVC machines, e.g. 9600, 9800, 9900?

JVC HR S9600 + JVC HR S9800 I have only the PAL models = Blur

Compare and image review on a real tube control monitor.
I put all the streams on the timeline of Edius and compare

Colors can be subsequently adjusted in postproduction

We here capture differently

either via HDMI or Canopus NX

S-VHS player device ----> Panasonic DMR EH65 [or EH595] -----> HDMI Splitter -----> Blackmagic Studio 2 [or Intensity Pro / or Blackmagic Shuttle USB3]

or directly via Y / C in the Canopus NX Karte.Pci or PCI-E.

Capture / read = Edius [YUY2] or VirtualDub [UYVY or Lagarith or Huffyuv MT ....... MT = Multitasking] or
Blackmagic Software UYVY.

here 3 Screens
Best Setter choose + color + comparison retrospectively adjust HDMI + NX Card

Some of those VCRs are "the best". See this: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vide...ing-guide.html
Good, yes. Best, no.

JVC models are not blurry. Too often, they're compared to Panasonics, which artificially sharpen.

Some tapes react poorly to JVCs, or Panasonics, or a number of VCRs. Video is not "one size fits all".

It sounds as if the 9911 has the chroma levels pumped up too much, based on your descriptions. The colors are probably false, not accurate. And then bleeding is the side effect of oversaturation.

Good, yes. Best, no.
is already clear.
No player device can play all the tapes perfectly.
That is why we then propiert during the test even 43 players for a test tape.

Goldwingfahrer: you use 43 different VHS models?

I have found that my JVC BR-S525U over-sharpens causing "haloes" (pictures here and the little comparison attached). Do you have any of the NTSC broadcast models? Even if yours are PAL, I'm curious, what do you think of the image quality in each mode?

Is there a reason you bought several large Hi8 decks rather than using the analog output of a Digital8 player with backwards-compatibility?

Have you tried connecting the AJA Kona LHe directly to one of those oldie VCRs without TBC? There seem to be conflicting posts about the extent to which the LH and LHe can correct jitter and handle bad video before dropping frames.

Broadcast NTSC = No
Normal = yes.
Unfortunately me the Pana AG7750 is defective

3 internal TBC cards disabled [removed]
Output not via YUV, only via Y / C.
Internal settings to factory settings.
Mostly set to "Edit".
As is always filtered with Avisynth or rainbow with NeatVideo.
A JVC BR-S525 and a BR-S822 now have too many hours and were taken out of service.
Have only photos.

Operating 1.JVC BR-S522 [H 001xx] + 1 JVC BR-S822 [004xx H]

I need comparisons.
Depending on the band I take a camera or a recorder, always Y / C out.
Capture Card Canopus NX or a Pana DMR EH595 [HDMI Out]
I each known which setter, camera or recorder the best picture on prof.Studio outputs control monitor.
That works from Timeline EDIUS NX on the map, via Y / C and YUV.

From camera there now and then jumps in brightness and the drives are not accurate.

Yes, of course I have also tested,

Without ext.TBC the jitter will not be removed.
neither with the Kona LHe even with the Black Magic Studio 2, Blackmagic Shuttle USB3 still with the AJA Kona LHe or Viewcast Osprey 240e.

The TBC on the NX card is good and well when looped through by a Pana DMR EH595 [PAL and NTSC]

Hello
I have at the moment JVC BR-S522-E on a cut place and also see the same mistakes.

TBC is switched on [maps are of course mounted]
Videoout = norm
DNR Poti = "C"

In the device inside I find no suitable Poti to shifting
So I have tried it sometimes with the settings in the Canopus NX map.
Simply the sharpness something reduces.

Picture 1 = setting NX
Picture 2 and 3 comparative pictures.... before... after

msgohan 08-04-2015 11:23 PM

Thanks for confirming.

Using the card to lower the sharpness (actually, adding blur) is similar to how general "dehalo" scripts work, although it's a more blunt approach. Another way is to resize down and then back up horizontally. All of these methods will remove real detail, if it existed at that threshold in the first place.

That's probably fine for comparison, but you can just as well use colourbars played from a modern bluray player. It's not hard to create such a DVD yourself; the colourbars are built-in to a program called Avisynth (and I personally had it's accuracy fixed since version 2.55), then it's just a matter of opening it in an authoring program like SimpleDVD.

I used this as a reference player:
