AV Tool AVT-8710 vs. Panasonic ES10?

What is more useful for vhs capturing?

Thanks

The ES10. If any of your source tapes are Macrovision protected, you need both. If any of your tapes are badly damaged or abused, you need both anyway.

Any reply assumes that you know the difference between line-level and frame-level tbc's and what factors of a VHS signal that each device is designed to work with.

It depends on the problem.

The ES10 is mostly for tearing. It processes more than the bare frame sync TBC, and can add artifacts as a result. The ES10 posterizes, varying dependent on source, and the NR can add even more. The ES10 is best for situations where the net result is improved capture. In general, for non-tearing/timing issues, the AVT-8710 would be best.

But it also depends on workflow. This assumes a quality VCR is in use. When a plain VHS VCR is in use, the ES10 will give the best net result.

The ES10 is best followed by TBC/8710, to ensure signal stability. The ES10 is mostly for cleaning the image only.
