Jitters for first 15min of VHS, then fine afterward?

Hi there, I have a 2hr recording (early '90s TV broadcast) that has an unstable image and audio dropouts for just the first 15 minutes or so. The frame is a little jumpy and every few seconds there are static lines. My VCR—a refurbished Panasonic AG5710—sounds like it’s making a lot of tracking adjustments, even during fast forward mode.
I’ve played around with manual tracking to no avail, and also cleaned my VCR head. Turning off the TBC minimizes the static lines, but the frame is slightly more bouncy. Has anyone come across a tape like this? I'm capturing through a Magewell Pro Capture HDMI. |
Twin Peaks?
This is the type of issue where it's good to have other VCRs on hand to compare playback, even if they're just cheapos. |
Thanks, you're probably right in that it's a case of bad synergy between this particular tape and player. Another one of my videos suffered from sticky shed syndrome (it was the dreaded Ampex 189 brand), so I thought this might be a milder form of that problem. It doesn't make sense for only a portion of the tape to be sticky though.
Oh, and yes, it's Twin Peaks! |
