Recommended audio card for bit-perfect recording via TOSlink?
Hi!
Any recommendations for audio cards that will do bitperfect digital recording via TOSlink? (like coaxial/SPDIF) I'm outputting laserdisc with TOSlink out, many discs have Dolby digital (AC-3) and the regular analogue tracks, (LPCM). I have Win10 but can do XP if needed for software. |
Not that I'm aware of. There were a lot of fancy models in the B&H catalogs 10+ years ago, and I got those at least twice a year. Lots of mixers, reference speakers, and other audio gear. It was always pricey stuff. I have no doubt it had TOSlink connected gear in there, but nothing I ever saw in any store was like that -- even Fry's or Microcenter, which had some high-end computer hardware.
I was video, not audio/music, so no in-depth investigations there. I was needed mixers, Sound Forge, and a few other basic needs. |
Do you already have SP/DIF capability? (Common in many legacy audio cards.) If so a TOSLink to SP/DIF converter might do it?

For the LCPM tracks, you may want to look at getting a used Edirol/Roland UA-1EX. eBay has them for $20-30, sometimes a bit more. It has a mini-TOSLINK input and is even compatible with 32kHz content (important for some DAT tapes recorded in this rare sampling rate). It will work without issue on XP, and there is a process for getting it to work on Windows 10 here:

Unfortunately I'm not sure how to do bitperfect captures of a bitstreamed AC3 track. You may want to ask at originaltrilogy.com, where members have done a lot of LD cap work. |
