Virtualdub desyncs when overlay video is activated
 

Hey guys,

I have a really weird problem that I haven'T found here yet:
as long as I have overlay video activated during VHS capturing, audio and video aren't in sync and even though virtualdub is trying, it never really gets them into sync.
When I disable video overlay, the sync is perfect right from the start. Btw, if I activate video overlay and audio playback, it seems to be completely in sync but it doesn't capture it that way. It's even much worse with audio playback on.

I use UTvideo lossless codec and the system power shouldn't be a problem, cpu is a core i5 2500k. used around 5% during capture.

Any ideas? It's really annoying to capture without video, because half of my cassettes aren't completely full.

A few questions that will help solve your problem:

1. What capture card are you using?
2. What overlay settings are you using in VirtualDub?
3. What drive are your files being recorded to?
4. Have you tried using any other codecs like HuffYUV or Lagarith?

3. I tried 3 different drives, my main ssd , secondary hdd and an external hdd via usb 3.0. the same everywhere.
4. yes, tried Logarithmus before and it was the same.

What I should add: if I remember correctly, it worked in one of my first trials even with both overlay and audio output without any problems. I tried out a lot of settings in the filters and the timing section afterwards and now I don’t know if any of these settings could be wrong. I tried using a newly downloaded virtual dub and also 32 vs 64Bit ... can’t restore the original setting somehow.

I'm assuming you're capturing on a PC with Windows 7? If audio playback is enabled during capture you will have dropped frames and sync issues.

Which version of VirtualDub are you using? For the highest compatibility with 32 bit codecs and operating systems use the version available for download in this post - http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vide....html#post9485

If on 64 bit operating system you should be using VirtualDub2 - http://virtualdub2.com/

I couldn't find any independent professional analysis of your capture card online, so it shouldn't be ruled out as the source of the issue. Consider ordering an ATI 600 USB from the marketplace. Usually sell for ~$75 and are proven to work well for SD VHS capture. Many users on this forum use this card regularly and it has been thoroughly documented & troubleshooted in other threads.

The AVerMedia card looks like its equipped with a Conexant capture chip. likely in a reference design. The problem is AVerMedia is notorious for buggy drivers. I've had other capture devices from them that the "Overlay" video was completely broken (no video). The only way I could get any sort of preview video on screen was to use the "Preview" option, which can be CPU intensive on older machines (an i5 should be fine).

Also, devices that have integrated audio capture should not have audio sync problems at all (VirtualDub should disable all timing options be default on these), as both video and audio inputs share the same hardware clock reference. Alas, I have had problems with the audio preview screwing up captures due to buggy drivers. Normally I capture with audio preview off and just show the VU meters. I monitor audio contents using a separate TV connected to the VCR.
