Audio speed and noise in Handbrake AVI to MP4 conversion?

I captured a MiniDV tape with WinDV in Type-1 and I'm trying to convert it to Mp4 since it's an easier file to handle by modern computers and software (not that I plan on doing any editing, just want the convenience of Mp4) and it's much less space-consuming. Unfortunately, around the 6min mark at a change of scene the audio starts messing up, playing too slow (all the voices get deep) and has crackles and pops and weird noises. The AVI source file plays fine throughout. Any way to fix this through Handbrake's settings or do I have to stick with the 12GB avi? I'm not inclined to using AviDemux since it doesn't support Nvenc which makes the process slow and overall is more complicated and I'm never happy with the deinterlacing.

According to handbrake, there is two audio streams, both PCM s16le at 1024kbps. When I export both of them, one plays fine up to the 6min mark but then it stops (no audio) and the other plays fine to 6min and then gets messed up (slow, deep voices and noisy/crackly)

I do not have Handbrake open right now, but have you tried exporting in a different audio format, such as AAC? AAC is lossy, but if that fixes it at least you narrowed down the problem. Also, there are more likely to be audio issues if you are using variable bit rate versus constant.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Turns out part of the tape was recorded with 12bit audio and the rest with 16bit and WinDV used 12bit for the whole thing. Captured it in two segments which had proper audio and stitched it with Resolve and all is good.
