Get DVD files onto my Mac?

I have a disk with an old film which I need to burn to DVD. The files can't be seen by my Mac iMovie. Would like to use my Mac but have access to a Windows pc.
Can you give me a run through how to go about getting a DVD from these files, point me to any threads or software needs, Thanks. (Sorry for such a mundane question)

That's a terrible thread title. Updated it.

Your Windows box is in dummy mode. It hides the extensions. I'm guessing those are VOB files, full authored folder from DVD recorder burned DVD.

DVD Decrypter in IFO mode on Windows, rip the files to new video VOBs (turn OFF file splitting on options). The take new VOBs to Mac via portable/external drive.

On Mac, MactheRipper and/or MPEG Streamclip, but how well those works depends on exact Mac OS running. New macOS is pretty terrible for video, while older versions can vary. Official support stopped versions ago, but both works as recently as 10.11,, maybe 10.14, that I've read.

You better bet is to rip on Windows.

The main part of this site has guides for ripping DVDs.

Thanks, didn't know what to call it. Appreciate your time.

When using a current MacOS I use MakeMKV. Then depending on what you want to do with the files use Handbrake to convert them to a format to watch if you're not doing anything else to them.

Thanks, I want to burn it to dvd with a few chop edits not much else at the moment. Are they Mac compatible programmes? Thanks

You need to tell us more about your computer, which MacOS you have, what programs do you already have in addition to iMovie etc.

Erich, Mac OS Mojave 10:14:2 not upgraded to Catalina yet as I have Toast 15 not 18 (64bit) No other software other than what comes loaded. 3.2ghz intel core i5 8gb 1867 mhz ddr3 (iMovie 10:1:12)
This disk was recorded on a tv dvd recorder as LS said.

Thanks for taking the time to help.

If you're on Mojave, the free MakeMKV to rip the files and free Handbrake to convert to a format iMovie can read in addition to your iMovie and Toast should be enough for just a few edits.

Thanks, will give it a try. Would it also work with Catalina? when I upgrade to Toast 18.

Thanks

I'm not sure, I'm avoiding Catalina like the plague. :) I plan on staying with Mojave for as long as possible. It should be OK though, as both Handbrake and MakeMKV are updated regularly.

Well the software down loaded ok and seems to run ok. tried my first and failed... not sure if doing things right but photo shows errors. Disk plays ok but MKV don't seem to like it. Stupid question but here it goes, I read somewhere that you can re name ts folders so imovie can see them with out changing the contents? don't think it's that simple but thought I would ask.

lordsmurf 06-26-2020 05:40 PM

Your drive is having problems reading the disc. It may be the drive at fault, or the disc.

If you try to rename something on a RAM/RW disc, you may very well screw everything up. Don't do that right now. That accomplishes nothing anyway.

When you say "disk [disc!] plays okay" ... plays in what, exactly? The same drive?

Hit a brick wall.

DVD works on all DVD players fine.
Programmes work perfectly as I copied a home made DVD and changed it's file type.

I think the problem is the way my Phillips record/player writes to the DVD, you can record in sections and I think this is the problem see photo.

I think my only hope is to be able to convert some how the video files in the TS folder.

Could not find the edit button.

Downloaded a programme NCHsoftware file converter. All but one files I have converted but one file stalls at the same point? cleaned the disk but still stops. Almost there, any ideas where to go from here.

lordsmurf 06-28-2020 12:28 PM

Steve_B, you're diving head-first in a rabbit hole of crap software. NCH is damned-near virus-like software. I actually had to reformat a Windows computers years ago, because it screwed up the OS install.

Did you try MacTheRipper and MPEG Streamclip yet? One rips, one edits.

Steve B 06-28-2020 04:55 PM

Thanks for the warning, will try the software. Thanks.
MacTheRipper for my OS is to buy, but don't say how much.
