Two TMPGEnc Questions
 

I've been checking out the overscan topics and I had a question.

If I download a file and it's in 640x480, what would I have to set it to restore overscan? Or does it vary? I'm using TMPGEnc. I set it to 627x460 as a test, but I haven't burned the MPEG onto a disc yet. Since downloaded files come in different sizes, I'm not sure what the ratio is, if there is one.

Secondly, when I did this conversion, the resulting file had no sound. What should I check for?

The MPEG-2 file must be encoded to a DVD-Video spec resolution. I suggest 352x480, and the guide gives you the correct resize based on that dimension.

The resize for custom size needs to result in a 4:3 file on a 640x480. So you'd be looking at about 12 from each side. and then 9 from top and bottom. But it has to be in a 2x2 size. So 628x470 maybe. Does that restore enough? Probably a good push at least.

The conversion not having sound means your audio codec is not being found. Is it AC3?

TMPGEnc needs to be set up correctly. Did you read the guides on it?

Cool, thanks for the info. That looks like the right ratio for a file of that size. I played some of those files on tv without correcting for overscan, and there wasn't any cutoff that really jumped out at me.

As far as the audio problem, it must just be that file that's acting up, because I've ran a bunch of tests on other stuff like anime music videos and a file in .wmv format, and the sound works fine. When I go to source setting for this file, the green line that indicates the audio soundtrack is completely flat. Ulead was able to encode the file with no problem, though.
