Selur Hybrid: Blu-ray files, x264 correct codec to use?
 

Based on the forum wisdom, here is where I have believe is the best practice with final encoded video files a from 8mm/VHS source:

For YouTube distribution
Upload at 1440p (2560x1440 or 1920x1440) or greater in order for Youtube to encode the video with the better VP9 video codec.

For Blu-ray distribution
Output to BD specs (15mbps MPEG-2), which is better than DVD-spec max 9.8mbps (which is realistically ever only 6mbps at most). A higher bitrate doesn’t make VHS sourced video look worse, according to Lord Smurf.

I think I will output my files in two formats, for YouTube and Blu-ray. I will then send the Blu-ray specced video files to TMPGEnc Authoring Works.

Here are my questions:

1. In Selur Hybrid, the only way I’ve found to select a Blu-ray spec video file is when choosing the x264 option. Is that correct? Or am I not following the best practice?
2. In Selur Hybrid (x264–Base–General Settings), should I set Encoding Mode to average bit rate 1 pass, and bitrate to 15,000 kbps? Is there any reason to go higher?

Exacting specs matter. Everything from resolution to the GOP length.

The BD specs allow for MPEG-2, and H.264, but only when certain conditions are met. It really depends on the source. If making SD 720x480 video BDs, then MPEG-2 best. Since Hybrid currently does not do MPEG-2, then it's the wrong tool for the exact task. Other encoders are needed.

I never mess with resolutions that high for Youtube. It's a waste of space locally, and the more you enlarge the VHS resolution, the worse it gets. I rarely go higher than 720p, with careful QTGMC deinterlacing, and NR. Youtube does what it does, I do what I need to do. I'm not convinced that the extra work and size is worth a tiny % in quality increase on a platform that simply overcompresses anyway.
