So last night I wanted to put these xvid files I got onto dvd. I saw TMPEG Express converts, so I let it sit overnight and convert (6 1/2 hours for 2 hours of video). I wake up, it looks great - but my mpg has no sound. Guess I can try and strip it out of the files and then add it on while making my .vob files.

Is there a faster conversion utility out there? And one that doesn't need extra work for sound?

This isn't something I do very often (nor plan on doing very often).

This sounds like the source XVID had a type of audio that TMPG cannot see. Run the file through GSPOT at tell me what kind of audio the XVID has.

I bet it's either AC3 or OGM, which is not natively read by TMPG.

The bitrate is a little different on each file, but that's it, just mp3.

VBR MP3 is probably part of the problem. I'll have to think about that one.

I guess the first thing I have to point out is my total lack of use of XVID. That is a download format I find mostly unnecessary. It's a fad format that's probably not going to last (much like DVIX and REAL and some others). Fringe uses, not mainstream.

My initial thought is to try and separate the video and audio streams, the convert the audio in BESWEET to WAV PCM audio. Whether there is actually a tool out there or not, I'm not sure. Can you demultiplex MPEG-4 (XVID)? Probably, but finding the tool may take a little research.

This, of course, assumes it is VBR audio causing the issue.

Another simple trick may be using VIRTUALDUB to extract the audio stream to a new file.

OPEN video file, then change the audio option to FULL PROCESS, then extract it as a new WAV file.
