Masking edges. Aspect ratio.

When getting to the task of masking the cruddy edges of a tape capture do the experts mask according to aspect ratio of the project or free-form to just cover the nasties?

The proper way of doing it is to crop to 704x480 (704x576 PAL/SECAM) and mask the remaining, then set the aspect ratio to 4:3 non square pixel.
