Handling video clips from smartphones
6 Attachment(s)
I am compiling short trip/travel videos using video clips from multiple smartphones and I have have a few queries. Since this forum primarily deals with digitizing and restoring videos from analog sources, I am unsure if this is the right place for this topic - please advice.
1. I learnt, that like older TVs, the newer LCD/LED TVs also convert Y=16 to 235 to RGB=0 to 255 for display when played directly on TVs or when fed in from physical or software media players. This I guess is true for encoded videos tagged with color_range=tv or limited. I therefore should aim to get luma ranges between 16 and 235. Is my understanding correct here? Do the newer TVs and players honor the tag color_range=pc/full with pixel_fmt as yuvj420p? If so, could I retain the clips in the current y = 0 to 255 range? What is the suggested option? 2. MediaInfo reports for 3 clips (Attachment 15384, Attachment 15385, Attachment 15386) from different phones; the older vid-01.3gp (Attachment 15389 saved as .mp4) does not have any info for color_range, color_space, color_transfer and color_primaries. The later clips vid-2 & vid-3 (Attachment 15387 & Attachment 15388) report values for these tags, and also report "_Original" values; What does _original represent here? 3. I believe bt470bg is used by BT.601 PAL - Why does a NTSC video use PAL color_primary; Also why is smpte170m/BT.601 and not BT.709 used for HD video? 4. Should I use the current reported values for color_range, color_space, color_transfer and color_primaries while encoding these clips? Many thanks. |
