Inserting writing on videos?

I have some videos, I'd like to add maybe the date to in the bottom right and possibly some other info on the video.. I have them as .avi files. Whut is the best way to handle this? Thx

Subtitles. Add it to the DVD, make it so you can turn them off and on.
