Question on the Panasonic DMR-ES10

I know the panasonic has great pass thru filters but exactly what types of things should I be looking for before I hook it up? I assume I should not have it in my recording chain unless I need it correct?
TIA

VCR -> ES10 -> other stuff (if any) -> capture device

The ES10 has a setting of some kind in the machine, noise reduction. It's in the menu of the recorder. I don't have mine on right now, can't look. But it's there. Check the manual if you've got one. Enable it.

ONLY USE WHEN NECESSARY! The filter does clean, but it also posterizes and ghosts some. WHen dealing with wiggly tapes, this error is better than wiggles. But if you tapes are fine, this will make them worse. Be warned and watch for this.

S-VIDEO only is suggested, in and out.

The BLACK LEVELS in the menu may need to be tweaked some. Do what looks best. Sometimes that's darker, sometimes that's lighter.

Do any other recent Panasonic models provide this feature? I have an ES17 I bought to finalize discs made on my EH80.

all the panny decks are built with this filter

Ok, I'll poke around with it, I did a test last night using my copy of Austin Power Widescreen on VHS and I couldn't find a difference in the recording with using it and without, maybe I didn't have the filter on in the first place.
