Mistakenly captured into MS-YUV 16 bit
Hello,
It turned out that I forgot to specify Huffyuv codec in Compression property in VirtualDub. I have already captured 4 VHS before realizing it. When I right clicked on the AVI file, it showed me Microsoft MS-YUV 16 bit. The file size was twice as big as that would've been if I chose Huffyuv. I recaptured one VHS into Huffyuv but honestly didn't find much visual difference - other than the different VHS noise for each take. What I am concerned with is that it says video sample size was 16 bit rather than 24 for Huffyuv or even DV. Please advise if some color information is lost. If not, then I'll just leave it as is and convert these files to Huffyuv AVI. I really don't feel like recapturing the cassettes. Thanks. |
Be pragmatic about it.
If, when viewed on the best system available to you, the results are satisfactory to you (and any involved paying client) - move on. The thing is that I currently don't have the best system available to me that's why I wanted to hear the opinion of experts. Thanks. :)
I did in fact recapture one VHS but during the 2nd take which was Huffyuv I got a dropped frame so I ended up going with the 1st take which was MS-YUV. |
The article linked above refers to formats with 10-bit and 16-bit luma (when no color subsampling is used, they are also referred to as 30-bit and 48-bit deep color).
YUY2, with 8-bit luma, is 16-bit overall because of color subsampling. Your Huffyuv that is being reported as 24-bit is very unlikely to actually be 4:4:4, so it isn't really 24-bit. I don't think Huffyuv even supports 4:4:4. Bottom line: both files are most likely using the same color format, and there is nothing to be concerned about. Compress your "MS-YUV 16 bit" captures with Huffyuv, open them in VirtualDub, and check the Compression property. It will probably say 24-bit even though they aren't. |
Thanks. I won't be recapturing them then. BTW, DV codec is also shown as 24 bit.
