Best way to merge segments from multiple captures?
 

What is the best way to merge segments from multiple captures of the same tape? Is there a way to chop it up and put it back together seamlessly, especially without deinterlacing?

Adobe Premiere. I don't even dare to use anything else.

Do you use CC or an older version? Is there a special way of lining clips up?

Depends on the needs on the project. I have CS1.5 and CS4, and use both. I have other versions, but they're not installed. I have everything from 6 to CS5. Those two were the most stable.

I keep 6.5 installed for legacy projects, as I used it quite a bit on the early 2000s. Sometimes opening old Adobe saves in new versions isn't 1:1.

It's a simple issue of using multiple timelines.

I've used Premiere, Liquid, and now I mainly use Edius Pro NLE for editing. There are many other NLE options
Key is to have an NLE that speaks the codecs/formats you are using, and works on your hardware.
Often one can find past releases for sale at bargain rates, and most new releases are geared to 64-bit OSs and HD formats that may not be needed for VHS work.

Generally one can align clips based on matching the audio waveform at the frame level, or if audio presents problems one can often use motion, trimming the clips to provide uniform motion as the time line cursor advances from one frame/clip to the next (no jumps in the motion at the clip boundary).

To align the same exact clip on multiple timelines, just cut at a scene change on each, then snap-align that.

I just got done with a project like that, in Premiere CS1.5.

In VirtualDub capture you can prevent capturing segments by disabling a setting called "Capture as segmented files". I don't remember which menu it's in, I don't have my capture machine with me right now. In the old days before I knew better I just opened each segment in VirtualDub with "Join ..." and recompressed them in one piece. Headache.
