My guide on removing vertical jitter using VirtualDub and Photoshop
 

I don't really know if this guide really fits in here, but I've never really found any good guides on how to remove vertical jitter anywhere on the Internet, so I've made my own ;-)

PART 1:

1. Open up your video file in VirtualDub.

2. Move the slider (1) to find the frame that jitters (2) and note what frame number it is (3).

3. Move the slider a few frames prior to the frames that jitters (1) and set an in-point (2).

4. Move the slider a few frames after the frame that jitters (1) and set an out point (2).

5. Go to "Video->Filters...".

6. Click the "Add..." button.

7. Find the "deinterlace" filter (1) and click the "OK" (2) button.

8. Select "Unfold fields side-by-side" and click the "OK" button.

9. Click "OK".

10. The "monitor windows" changes into something like this.

11. Go to "File->Export->Image sequence".

12. Set output format to "Windows BMP" (1), chose a directory where you want to save the still images (2) and give the stills an filename (3).

13. The operation can take some time depending on the length of your image sequence. When it's done, quit VirtualDub and continue with PART 2.

PART 2:

14. Open up VirtualDub and chose "Open video file..."

15. Browse for the directory where you saved your "image sequence" (1), select your first still picture (2) and select "Open" (3). Make sure that "Automatically load linked segments" (4) is checked.

16. Go to "Video->Filters...".

17. Click the "Add..." button.

18. Select "deinterlace" (1) and click "OK" (2).

19. Select "Fold side-by-side fields together" (1) and "OK" (2).

20. Click "OK".

21. Now, move the slider (1) to find the frame that jitters (2) and note the frame number (3). When you've identified the jittering frame, move the slider a few frames back and minimize VirtualDub.
IMPORTANT: You MUST move your cursor away from the jittering frame before continuing. If the jittering frame is selected, it will be write protected so that Photoshop won't be able to write to it.

22. Open Windows Explorer and go to the directory of your image sequence (1). Find the jittering frame (in my case #16) and open it up in Adobe Phoshop.

23. The stillpicture should look similar to this.

24. First there's a few Photoshop settings that must be changed. First, you want your background color to be black. Click the bg color (1). In the color picker that pops up, enter 000000 in the color field (2) and click "OK" (3).

25. Chose the "Rectangular Marquee Tool" (1). Make sure "feather" (2) is set to "0". Set Style to "Fixed Size" (3), Width (4) to "50%" and Height (5) to "100%". (Shortcut "M" for selecting "Rectangular Marquee Tool").

26. Click to the left or to the right outside of the picture (on one of the X-es) to select the left or the right field.

27. Chose the "Move Tool" (1) and make sure that the zoom ratio (2) is set to 100%. If not, it will probably move more than one pixel at a time. (Shortcut "V" for selecting "Move Tool").

28. Set it to 100% by entering digits in the field (1) or by selecting the "Zoom Tool" (2) and click where you want to zoom in. (shortcut "CTRL+Space bar" and click).

29. Move the selected field by hitting the arrow up- or down key on your keyboard.

30. Now Save your picture. Do not close Photoshop, only minimize it until you've checked the result in VirtualDub.

31. Jump back to VirtualDub, move to the jittering frame #16 and see if the jitter is gone. If not, go back to Photoshop and undo the work you've done.http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/atta...1&d=1433707390

32. Undo by go to "Edit->Step Backward" if something wasn't right.

PART 3

33. If everything's fine, go to "Video->Frame Rate..."

34. Select "Change frame rate to" and enter your frame rate (1). In my case it is "25.000" and click "OK" (2).

35. Save your video, import it into your favorite editor and ENJOY.

All that for a music video ? (23.9fps>25fps) i don't know...
If you use qtgmc on avisynth and adjust it's settings you should be happy enough, something like:

It's not really as hard as it may look like. My guide maybe explains everything a littlebit to well, I guess.

The whole jitter removal process in Photoshop is done in just 6 very easy steps actually:
1 open. 2 keyboard shortcut "M". 3 mouseclick "left" or "right". 4 keyboard shortcut "V". 5 keyboard arrow "UP" or "DOWN". 6 keyboard shortcut "CTRL+S".
That's all there is. It's all done in just 10 seconds, really... and isn't that hard at all if you ask me ;-)

I don't understand avisynth scripts :-( Those numbers and codes doesn't tell me anything. What does this code actually do, really? Is it supposed to remove jitter from frame #16? Or does it analyze the whole video and removes jitter from all of it automatically?
This code looks chineese to me. Sorry, I don't speak the language :-(

But, you say that it deinterlaces automagically? What do you mean, actually? Does that mean that it analyzes the video and apply deinterlacing only to the frames that jitters? My problem is that pretty much all my tapes jitters just for one frame every 5 - 10 minutes. If I'll have to cut out parts of my video and apply this code only to the scenes that jitters and then join them all together in my videoediting software, then I guess that's pretty much the same work as using my method with VD and Photoshop? Only with the difference that those parts of my video will no longer be interlaced? I guess it's not recommended to deinterlace the whole tape just for a few bouncing frames at 5 to 10 minute intervals? Another problem with my tapes is that the jitter varies between the upper and lower field on the same tape. The first time it may be the upper field that jitters, next time it may be the lower field :( How does this code react to that? I think I'll need to know exactly what happens to my video when applying this code to it ;-)
