Computer for factory sealed ATI AIW Radeon 7200 PCI?
 

Howdy,

I was recently gathering some equipment for an existing workflow when I came across a factory sealed ATI AIW 7200 Radeon PCI. I don't currently have a tower that I can install this in and I am struggling to select the best PC from the 2000-2010 era that could run this.

Goal: To archive lossless high quality captures of several old home movies (~50 VHS, ~ 100 VHS-C, 20ish HI8 tapes, 10 mini-dv)

Current setup:

1. JVC SR-VS30U with Remote (has a "TBC" in it, still working/researching how to get a true TBC that isn't trash)

2. Hauppauge USB live 2.0 with s-video capture

3. Toshiba Satellite A305-S6898 running Windows 7 ultimate and virtual dub
Specs: Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo Processor T5800 @ 2.0GHz, 4gb DDR2 SDRAM, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470. Recently added dual internal SSD storage on the laptop.

Note: I have been able to get some pretty decent captures with no frames dropped with Huffyuv via virtual dub. But I am curious if using the ATI card would yield noticeable improvements. I also have a DCR-TRV480 that I can use for Hi8 tapes

Desired Setup:

1. JVC SR-VS30U with Remote
2. Some form of TBC
3. ATI AIW 7200 Radeon PCI (XP Computer)

Are there any existing PCs from y'all's experience that would work well with this card? I know you need to build a pc from the ground up with the AGP version, but I would imagine a PCI-based ATI AIW would have more flexibility due to the wider availability of PCI slots in this generation of computers.

PCI AIW is a nice find.

Remember, TBSC audio also needed. So 2x PCI slots.

It takes some effort, but you can build a powerful system, using 7th gen i3/5/7 Intel, using certain Gigabyte B150 boards. XP Integral required. Also need USB3 PCIe card, mobo USB does not work. You could scrounge together any system, some quite crappy. But the best, and worthy of AIW in the 2020s, is the build I now do. Not just XP installed, but hardware dual bot to Win10 for file management after capture. So single system for edit/process/etc is also possible!

You surely need a proper frame TBC. Don't skimp here. AIW and VS30 is good start, that's last piece to complete!
