Help converting VHS to DVD with the best tools!
 

Hello,

I've just like you other people vhs tapes with precious memories. The problem is I want to convert the vhs to dvd with the best quality conversion as possible. I know that vhs isn't a good quality but I know that you people have the experience and knowledge to give me advice etc.

I have 2 different vcrs I can use

a sony slv-E600 and a jvc hr s8960. The jvc has a s-video output and also tbc. But sony has a trilogic technology. With my eyes I don't see much differences. The vcr are attached with a diamond vc500 usb converter. I also see programs like virtualdub for avi lossless compression. My question to you people what you'r opniniouns are for converting the vhs. Maybe I'm doing it all wrong. And what programs are good for optimizing colors adding menus etc. Because I once read that lordsmurf didn't like powerdirector from Cyberlink at all. So all your help is welcome!!!

use the JVC - Sony VHS VCRs are no good except for a few rare JDM models
also ditch that Diamond and get an ATI card
if you are using XP get and AIW and use MMC - (best setup)
if using Vista or 7 get a 600 and use CMC -(still good)
also you need a TBC-1000 or other good inline TBC

Thanks for your advice!! :) About the Ati card, do you mean a 600 pcie or a 650 pcie? And what about the ati 600 usb device are those the same quality or different than the pcie cards?

the 600 - either usb , pci or pci-e is fine

What about ati wonder 650 serie and 7x serie are those good? Or have those a bad architecture?

Best quality means this:

- using a quality VCR
- using TBC
- optionally, a proc amp, audio mixer (for EQ, levels), and other gear as needed (detail, ES10, etc)
- using a quality capture card
- capturing lossless AVI huffYUV
- restoring whatever wasn't fixed in hardware, often with Avisynth and VirtualDub for video, Sound Forge and Audicity for audio
- converting to DVD (MPEG-2) or Blu-ray (MPEG-2 or H.264) using MainConcept
- authoring with DVD Studio Pro (DVDSP), Ulead DVD Workshop 2 (DVDWS2), and (for the Blu-ray only) TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4-5

That's one of the best methods, the one I most often use.

Your VCR is good.

If you get an ATI 600 card, I prefer the USB version. The 650 is NOT the same as the 600 card.

There is one problem, I live in the Netherlands and I'm using Pal. Nobody on the Internet ships the ati 600 to europe. I you where standing in my place. Wich other capture device would you buy. I'm going to capture with virtualdub.
