My TV doesn't have s-video! Product/model suggestions?
 

Today my VCR came in the mail. A JVC HR-S7800U (back of manual says the year 2000 on it). Got it on eBay from the original owner who used it for only a month. With that, *I think* I have all the hardware needed.

AVT 8710 TBC
ATI TV Wonder HD 600 USB
10 "donor" VHS tapes to use for both testing the vcr (and learning its features) and transferring my VHS-C tapes into
Blank VHS-C tape to crack open and familiarize myself with its parts and properly transfer the film into a VHS tape before I do this with my home movies.

However, I forgot one of the most important parts. The s-video hookup. My Panasonic TV (which I use as my pc monitor) doesn't have it :smack: My brother's TV has it, but for some reason his TV won't work as a monitor for my PC (I read somewhere that certain TV's simply don't work as monitors for a/this PC. I think I even looked up his TV model # to clarify this). My mom's TV doesn't have it. My dad's TV has it, but it's one of those older/early flat screen models that were still kind of thick and heavy (I think he bought it in 2002). It's a Samsung, serial # B19V3CELA04312M.

I'm not gonna bother asking if there's any way around this with some sort of adapter, because I know it probably isn't true. So can anyone tell me which TV models (or monitor) are recommended? Thanks!!

you dont really need it on the TV
the svideo cable from the VCR connects to the S-video input on the capture card
for out put just connect the VGA cable from the PC to the monitor.

for just testing the VCR you can use the composite

My thank you reply that I posted yesterday isn't here now. Probably the maintenance done on the site. THANK YOU volks. I literally stood up and did a dance when you replied. I was seriously concerned I'd have to buy a new tv lol. All I need now is an S-video cable. Now, a friend of mine has one that he hasn't used that he's gonna give me, but my question is, does which brand of cable matter? Any recommendations for a particular brand?

just use a good quality shielded cable - they are not expensive - dont waste money on overpriced Monster brand cables.
i like to use the shortest cables that work - no need to use a 6ft cable when the deck is 2 feet from the PC

you are going to need 2 s-video cables - 1 from the the VCR to the AVT-8710 and a 2nd from the AVT-8710 to the capture card.

Nope. You had me worried for a minute there! volkjager was the last reply. I'd locked the site prior to backup -- we took 3, just in case -- then did the upgrade. The only way it happened is if you were replying at the very minute I was locking it. But their were not any active users when I started at 8am Sunday. We've got to do a mini-upgrade this morning, but that should be under an hour. This was our last "silent" upgrade (no obvious changes to users).

You'll notice the next one in a few weeks. :wink2:

Anyway, back on topic, just use a good computer monitor -- preferably an IPS LCD -- not a TV. Not now, not anymore.

I replied at 3:38, 5 minutes after volks' reply. But w/e. Anyway, why do you suggest a monitor over a tv?

those look pretty thin - i doubt they are shielded good if at all
