divx compatibility with kvcd?

i read in an earlier forum that you can not encode a divx file with kvcd becuse it is being compressed twice. Is this true?

urban tec 12-09-2002 01:18 AM

Not strictly, you can do it, it is just that the quality will suffer a little as you are encoding from an already compressed source apart from that there is no difference than converting from the original DVD.

99% of all the kvcd's i make are from divx encoded avi files, and the quality is fantastic (not dvd quality). I am using the 180 minute template and every encode i do is very good.

I have put a guide up at

http://www.fozzieb.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/divx2kvcd/

it works for me

divx compatibility with kvcd

thanks for the help fozzie but can i not just download the divx files and then convert them through tmpgenc using the 180 template and then burn them. is it necessary to use all those programs?
thanks for the help so far please continune writing!

doverm 12-09-2002 01:00 PM

same stuff

i read your guide and i noticed you are using "pal" version instead of "ntsc" is this because you are from scotland, in the us do i need to use the "ntsc" or does it not matter. and will the settings you wrote out need to be altered to change it?
thanks very much!!!!!!

fozzieb 12-09-2002 01:10 PM

For ntsc, dont tick pal in fitcd, use ntsc kvcd template and burn as ntsc vcd

and you could jut use tmpeg, but sometimes it wont work (cant handle 5 channel audio)

also i am trying to use your layout you gave me, but first your link to graphedit is broken and the version of graphedit i am using does not match the options you are describing. just thought i would tell you. also about tmpgenc, when i just use it, it still doubles the file size to around 1.3 gigs!!!!
any more tips
thanks again!!

fozzieb 12-09-2002 05:00 PM

use the the tmpeg from my site, the latest 2.59 does not work with KVCD templates,

and the graphedit link works at this end.
As for the options i take it you mean filters, you must have the audio & video filter on my site installed (or WinDVD)

8O What doesn't work :?: It works for me every time
Make sure the "Audio Source" in TMPEG is blank, and you are encoding "ES Video only".

i finally got my first kvcd to work but i didnt use all your steps i just ran it through tmpgenc, the problem was my version of the program because i did it the same way. thanks for the help, another one i did looks bad though because its 352 x 480 and the picture is about 2 inches tall, so basically do i need to encode most of them 352 x 240?
thanks again!

If you use a .avs script generated by FitCD, your picture will look correct on your TV set. It will look streched vertically in WMP. It will also look correct if you play it back with WinDVD.

what did i do wrong!

Hi, i used your guide and the picture is excellent but the audio is out of sync.

fozzieb 12-11-2002 08:55 AM

Did you adjust the interleving in virtual dub when saving film with uncompressed audio?

Anonymous 12-11-2002 09:15 AM

no but the file that i`m left with after virtual dub is ok. the problem is after i encode with tmpgenc.

logan555 12-12-2002 04:50 AM

To convert from a DIVX format to KVCD, I just use fitcd to set the rihgt size, crop etc.. and then I use tmpgenc. The only thing that I do to make it work and done in one pass the final mpeg is to set in Environmental setting the tick to Direct show Multimedia file reader. In this way I don't get any problem whit the audio and get in 1 pass the mpeg file.
The only problem that I get is if I don't have the right codec ( divx 3,4,5. Xvid). But if you can view your divx from the windows media player the above will works.

Anonymous 12-12-2002 01:10 PM

no, but the audio on the file is ok after encoding with virtual dub

Anonymous 12-12-2002 01:15 PM

just fix the problem. wot i had to do was change the audio settings in fit2cd and now the audio is in sync
