A WONDERFULL IDEA :!: 8) to enter in one ADVANCED FORUM, you have to LOGIN first! :ole: testing again....(log out and back to edit) edited:...yeah.... :flip: "disclaimer" and "who is online" before login! IS an WONDERFULL idea !!! my congrats, cos a simple solution protect the forum and with a big advice BEFORE anyone login showing that you take care of this precious place!!!! :officer: and to login you need to be a MEMBER!!! :hopline: i love that solution!!! |
Thanks Jorge :D
That's EXACTLY the idea :!: People HAVE to read the disclaimer, and then, only after registering, they can post  I hope this helps clean up the forum a little, specially from all the "leechers" who never log in ;) This also helps increase the number of registered users :!: -Karl |
i lost some detail.
in this moment: In total there are 44 users online :: 17 Registered, 3 Hidden and 24 Guests how can we have 24 Guests if now only after login we enter in the forum? :? what i loose? |

All they can see is the same thing you see when you're not logged in. Also, the "persistence" of the forum is 15 minutes, so if any unique IP address hits the site, it will count as one guest user, and stay there, even if the user leaves the site. -Karl |
And 139 new registered users, and counting, just today
I guess the trick DOES work  |
Hya,
God bless you two guys  Great idea guys this will most certainly improove the forum. You know what? I think we'll have to "work" even harder now that we have 139 newbies to take care of  Cheers |

Maybe I should start a "Toll charge" or "Pay One-Time, lifetime fee of $1.00" for new registrations. Seriously :!: Maybe that's the way I could make some extra income, for site maintenance, etc  Hell, with just the users registered today, I could have taken my wife for a great dinner, movie, and even have some fun at a casino  -Karl |
maybe $2.00 for new registrations and take Correia and me to the cassino, movie and for dinner too! 8O Seriously too :!:  |

Better yet, after a week or so of registrations, I'll be able to buy a ticket to Brazil :D -kwag |

...wait one more week with and buy a ticket for Correia too! then will came you, Mercy and Correia to Brasil together! 8) |
Guys, calm down
This is no Steven Spielberg movie is it :?:  Seriously: charging new user registrations to the forum wouldn't be fair IMHO. Even because there would be no way for people to know what's inside before registering, would it? I don't buy anything without knowing it's specs 1st. But, bottom line, that would be Karl's personal decision. Anyway within a month, we would have money to organize that 1st anual KVCD meeting at PR or Brasil such as I proposed in the "anything not related to video" forum sometime ago. I can already picture it (me Spielberg now): great sun, beautifull beach, gorgeous women, a great barbecue and lot's of caipirinha and ice cold beer :!: Ah, those were the days... Cheers |
Quote:
and you're not alone Spielberg, you have a friend in special FX called "Jorge Loucos"! |

Don't get me wrong but I have a bad feeling on this one :( If it's a fair one to new users and if we don't loose popularity because of it... The only upside I've think of is that it will keep newbies away for sometime. That should mean more Advanced video convertion talking instead of the old newbie 20 post on "how to make a kvcd in 10 minutes". Quote:

Hi Rui,
There are ways that users will see what's available, and what's going on in the forum. For example, I'll probably integrate a "real-time ticker" script/viewer, of active topics in the forum, and a full screenshot of what the forum looks like, so new users can see what to expect. This will clearly clean up the forum, and as a matter of fact, it will force people that really want to learn and participate in KVCD forums. Leechers will be gone forever, and this is a good thing. As an example, look at labdv.com forums http://www.labdv.com/ , where they charge 24 dollars for 9 months :!: And the topics there are pretty generic, and it's not a specialized forum, like kvcd.net And they already have 8000+ registered VIP users. So we are looking now at a one time subscription of around $2.49. This is dirt cheap, and being "one time", it's very attractive for new users :) I'm already working on it ;) This will also keep KVCD.Net free of any future advertizing banners, which was already on schedule. We were going to do a single top banner on each forum page, but I rather keep it clean of that. That's one of the things I will write on the description, and the $2.49 fee is really a subscription/donation to help maintain the forum. I feel this is a good business model, as many people (myself included) hate banners on forums. They distract :!: -Karl |
Hi Karl,
That's one thing I forgot to mention in my last post. That is, the forum maintenance fees. If that's the problem, you're right :!: I hate it, I hate it and I hate it  commercial banners :!: I will pay my subscription and my wife's just to save us from that  Just tell me how and I'll tell you when ;-) Just tell me you'll accept something different than VISA card. I don't own any  Cheers pal |
Hi Rui,
You, and all the current registered users don't have to pay a dime ;) It's only for new users :) The beauty of this, is that I can go back, after I turn on this mechanism, and delete ALL users that have never posted (and others that use the forum for PM'ing only), and if they want to come back, they will have to register. I'm currently working (actually my wife!) on the new Kagi and PayPal accounts, as we speak ;) -Karl |

All users that are now registering, starting after username ophil (4490 on page 96 of members), are either valid (pending) users, or bogus registrations :!:
The way it works, is that when they register, they no longer get an activation E-Mail. We have to activate them manually, after we receive the PayPal confirmation. So probably the 100+ users per day that are registering every day, are either bogus, or some user who doesn't have anything to do, and is just registering wildcard names. It doesn't do any harm to us, because the only way for a new user to be able to see the forum and post, is if he/she is activated. I'm sure this will bring a LOT of peace to KVCD.Net, and we won't see the disasters that are being experienced on "other" forums, as this now brings a new level of control to this site. What I will now do is just look at the forum database, and "purge" new registered users one week back, on a daily basis (like a sliding window timeline) so the phoney users registering will be deleted daily. -Karl |
Hi,
And why not using a 'read-only' free membership? Because new people have to pay for something they don't know (they can't even see what they will buy). This way, you kick off leecher (by registring) and you control 'newbies'. The only problem I see, making people pay to enter kvcd.net forum, is that after that, you can't tell them that this forum is reserved for Advanced video conversion, and don't answer their questions... They will feel the right (by paying) to ask everything... Don't know what others thinks, but I'd prefer a free read only user... Salu2 Fabrice EDIT: Other problem I see is paying the fees. In Europe, we still have problem using US paying servers... EDIT 2: you can't see Registration instruction, because of a 'This forum is locked: you cannot post, reply to, or edit topics.' message... |
Hi fabrice,
I understand your point, but letting the forum "Read Only" leaves about 70% "leechers" reading and sucking information from us, without ever posting. For example, the labDV forums claim to have over 8,000 VIP registered users, and hundreds of "on-line" users. But when you browse their forum, you see only a handfull of users logged in. On vcdhelp.com, they claim (and post!) HUNDREDS on user names on their donation page, which I find very doubtful, because KVCD.Net in over two years, hasn't even reached 5 donators :!: So we studied the current state of sites, most are making money with advertizing banners and pop-ups. So we decided to do this "dirt-cheap", because I consider $2.49 peanuts. Hell, it costs more to go to a video store and rent one DVD  So I will put more information on the disclaimer and links, such as this that I just mentioned, that this forum will be kept clean of advertizing, as we consider the $2.49 like a small donation to keep the site running and cover maintenance expenses. As for other currencies, any new user that clicks on the PayPal button, can actually choose to pay in different forms. Here's a copy&paste from PayPal: "What if I don't have this currency? PayPal lets you send money in any of the currencies we offer (U.S. Dollars, Canadian Dollars, Euros, Pounds Sterling, or Yen) without having to open a currency balance." -kwag |
