Updating computer...
 

I´m just about to update my computer, now I have P3 1000 MHz with 512 megs of sdram, I´m about to by new motherboard and Pentium celeron 2000 MHz with 512 megs of ddr-ram.
The question is, if the encoding takes about 13-16 hours now, how fast will it be after the update, any clue?

I've got P4 2.4ghz (256mb ddr pc2700 ram, 120gb maxtor 7200, ati
radeon 7000 32 mb ddr, via p4 400 mb) because of the encoding. On my
old celeron 433 each movie (approx 1:30h) was taking 40-45h to encode.
With my P4 takes about 50% more of the movie size (2h movie = 3h
encoding, 1:30h movie = 2:15h encoding, etc.). It was like a dream after
those 40-45h sessions... it still is...

Get a P4 if you can. TMPEG will take advantage of SSE-2 instruction set, which is not available on P3 (Celeron) series.

Too expensive :( Maybe later, but now I have to settle to a celeron!

Best price I found was HP 754n from Best Buy or Circuit City. Has DVD burner (DVD+RW/CDRW) drive, 2.53 GHz, 512 DDR SDRAM, 80 GB hard drive, 64 MB video ram for $999.

I really like it. Compared to my old 750 P3, it is lightning.

How about AMD XP 2200? Would that be better?

I didn't use amd since my amd486 but I heard good words about amd
lately. Just they are much more hotter then pentium and celeron and you'll
need to put more fans that maybe will make the computer a little bit more
noisy. You may very easy to overclock amd (will increase the heat) and
it'll become more powerful then p4 2.4 at least.

I don't know what are the prices in Finland but in USA it cost me about
$300-50 for p4+mb+ram+power. I used all my other old components.

I think I´ll settle for celeron right now, I am buying a motherboard which supports Hyper threading so maybe in the future I can get all the benefits from that!

Now I think athlon XP +2200 would be better, can´t decide :cry:

Get the athlon XP +2200. It's cheaper, it's faster, and you can use it as a room heater if you need :mrgreen:

heater is not more a big problem with athlon.

i found a simple solution to decrease the temperature and pm to muaddib!

i see in my athlon 1.6 :

in my pc now:
idle of course.only in internet:

cpu temperature: 27c and
mb temperature: 24 c

when encoding with 100% of cpu (and overclocked to 1.9):

cpu temperature: 49c and
mb temperature: 28c ... 29c

Please, let us know the results with amd xp +2200 when you
have some tests with it.

My modem broke on sunday and I got a new one yesterday :roll:
After blood, sweat and tears I got the motherboard and processor installed, quite worth it I´d say.
Before it took 15-17 hours to encode, now it takes only 4-6 hours!

With cpu amd xp+2200 right? What motherboard, what memory, what's
the size of the memory? I guess that's enough for encoding. What I meant
is that the other parts maybe are very important for many things but encoding.
Maybe if you mention video card and size I (we) will get an idea
how it will work if you are ripping a dvd. Thanks in advance for your answer.

Just if you would like to share will be interesting to me personally approx.
how much did cost your update in europe?

And btw amd can be overclocked much more then intel and as I can hear
it's very stable.

I've been running an XP1800+ for about 6-9 months now and it is a good processor. Typical encode times are between 4-6 hrs for 1hr 30min to 2hr films (i have 256Mb memory) running windows 2000 pro.

Its a shame TmpgEnc does not work in unix, as I have access to an 8-way server with 4 Gigs of memory. Maybe one day....

It does run under Wine :D. I tried it about a year ago under Lindows. The thing that won't run is AviSynth. Maybe it's time to try again :idea:
