guys... i didn't write the program but i have been following its development from the begining. all the interactions between Nate and the rest of the guys in the forem can be read here:
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/f...te-net-discuss

most of it is in the June posting last two weeks. I recomend that you all join the email forem. the interactions will be sent you you either on a daily or weekly basis, as you choose. This is the only place where anything is happening to improve mute.

No one is saying that napshare is anywhare near pefect. In fact it needs a lot of work and all of you can help. some just by feedback. some of you may have a very good understanding and may be able to help with debugging the code itself. I think the goal should be to have a fast, stable and anonymous mute client by the fall.

Mute Web caching problem

nate had this to say. i don't know if correct but i will put it out there for evaluation:

Quote:

We may be down to only 2 caches!

The sourceforge one is gone, the other one seems to be re-directing to a
regular site. (sf rules don't allow caches, we should be happy it lasted
this long, please remove it from your file)

Please put the word out on every list and forum you have access to, we
need more people to put up a cache. Make sure you let them know why this
is so important and that they are only supplying IP addresses, not file
content etc... I think you can get info like that at places like:

http://gnucleus.com/gwebcache/
http://www.guox.de/gwebcache/
http://www.jonatkins.com/page/software

If you know of any other caches for mute-net, please let me know so I
can add them to the distribution file for releases.

I think the caches right now are specific to mute-net, I don't know if
it's possible to just start using the "version 2" caches out there that
exist for gnutella, the protocol was designed to handle new networks
like this and "G2" but I haven't done the research

mute update

Change log:

--- 7-29 debug release:
1. settings dialog has changed and offers new settings and web links to important MUTE sites.
2. now users can choose individual share, incoming, and hash directories
- this allows users to share files from read only sources like CDs.. however... currently incoming files (once completed) will not be moved to the shared directory
3. new button on downloads page to explore incoming directory

4. Purge Hash Button, old hashes have prooven to be the source of many problems including high CPU usage. An occasional cleaning out is good.

You can download from Planet Peer if you register http://www.planetpeer.de/index.php

or you can download without registering from this independant site in Italy http://xybaron.altervista.org/ Click on "7/29/04- debug-MFC Mute .3 GUI. ZIP"

Note: You sometime you have to wait a while to connect. You can use a utility from Planet Peer to connect faster. It is called Seed Node Updater - SNU . You will find it in the download section of Peer Planet. http://www.planetpeer.de/index.php

This file is only the executable. After you download it you must extract it into your current Mute directory in order for it to work. Then just click on it.

As Zyphon said above, I'll stick to official sources.
I just don't trust all the "forks" that are hapenning, even if the sources are available.
This means I am forced to compile the sources, just to see if I get the same executable as the one I downloaded.
I'll just wait (and work) with Jason on the original and official implementation.
There's only one true and original MUTE specifications ;)
