Yeah, the SLBR ( Super Low Bitrate ) template
Because right now the original 180 minute template looks like a VCD, so maybe at 240 minutes, it will look like the original LBR

Actually I think it's time for me to change all GOPs in all templates with the updated 1-12-2-1-24 ( Actually 1-5823-2-1-24  )
This GOP just completely blew apart the old GOPs.
If I got "The Green Mile" looking the way it does in a single CD, and that movie is not 16:9 8O It's higher, then could it really mean that the actual LBR with the new parameteres could be rated as 240 minutes "Convenience/lower quality for portables" template and named SLBR and the actual LBR could be upgraded to "180 minute near VCD quality" :?: And no, I'm not kidding 8O, but the thing is I don't have a 240 minute wide screen movie to test it on
Any volunteers

Edit: I actually meant that the new LBR could be rated 240 minutes "Lower quality convenience template for portables" or 180 minutes "Near VCD quality"

Yep, do it. And make sure scene-change detection is off ;).

Ah, but you do have 2 120-minute widescreen movies... Track 1 and track 2 :D.

You think 180 is only "near" VCD quality? Have you tried The Green Mile on your TV yet?

Will do later tonight :D

Actually, I only saw it on the PC, and it looks like a VCD. I usually try my final encodes on the HDTV, and if they look good there, then it means that they should just look about perfect on regular ( Not HDTV ) TVs.

Edit: I just watched a piece of my commercial "The Matrix" VCD in my PC, and HELL 8O , "The Green Mile" looks about the same, and less blocky 8O 8O . Is that what you mean by if I had tried it on a TV :?:

That's pretty impressive -- I've heard that commercial VCDs are generally authored much more carefully than DVDs because of the extremely limited bitrate. I'd love to know what a professional compressionist could do with your templates.... :D

By tried it on a TV I kinda meant, tried it on a TV . I find a big difference between my monitor and my TV set, not just in sharpness but also luminosity. My TV set de-emphasizes artifacts that are fairly clear on the monitor. Mind you, I have a very good monitor ;).

Ok, I finally watched it on my HDTV. Looks "almost" like my "Matrix" commercial VCD, but video is more "unstable" Gibbs is dancing everywhere on movement. But overall picture quality is better than the previous "Green Mile" I did when the first LBR was posted some time ago. Much better, but definitively not a movie to watch on a HDTV. Period. On my 60" old rear screen projection, it's perfectly watcheable. Still, the best TV would be a standard (non-HDTV) 32" or so. And as I mentioned earlier, if it was a true 16:9 Wide Screen, then it would pass the true "VCD quality" certification :D. This movie is almost Full Screen"

Ok, so maybe a good classification for this one would be maybe 180mins widescreen or portable TVs, and something like 140mins or so for fullscreen or regular analog TVs?

Exactly!. 180 minutes Wide Screen should look pretty much like a VCD. Of course, depending on the type of material. For a Full Screen, maybe 180 X .75 = ~135 minutes :?: should be about right.

don't know if you have it kwag, but to test the 240 min template you could do LOTR FOTR Extended version thats about 3 and a half hours.

edit:

I would gladly test it out, is it as simple as rip movie process through dvd2avi then encode it? or would you recomend the avs script? if so u'll have to tell me what to do.

I'm going to try SansGrip recommendation of doing two movies, one on each track 8O
Actually, we just need to encode one Wide Sceen movie of no more that two hours, with a target of 400MB instead of 800MB. Then we take a look and see what it looks like. If it does look at least like the original LBR, then we know it's the 240 minute LBR and not the 180 minute LBR :D
I'll try that today

-kwag

kwag 12-21-2002 10:11 AM

I just finished encoding a test sample run on "K-Pax", target for 400MB.
The result is ....... Crap :D
The quality curve just drops off at that low bit rate. So the LBR max time is still 180 minutes, but actually looks MUCH better than the original LBR. For 240 minutes on a CD, well, maybe in a year or so with new techniques :D
Still, with all the new stuff that's been done, the LBR now should look just like a VCD with wide screen movies up to ~180 minutes. And that is really cool :D
I also believe that with the new methods developed, just about any movie can be put on 2 CDs at 704x480 or with the x3, with quality as equal to the source. To do that with standard SVCDs, would probably take ~4 CD's, and won't look as good because of the lower resolution.

andybno1 12-21-2002 04:57 PM

the movie encoded at 704x480 for 2cds; would there be any difference in quality if I done a movie via dvd2avi then through tempgenc than to do the movie with avs script?

Hi

Speaking of long movies... You could try "Woodstock the director's cut", both sides in a single CD... that's almoust 4 hours :)

I wouldn't recommend it :) The video quality would be quite sub-par would be my guess. For something like Woodstock, you'd want your audio encoded at AT LEAST 160 as that would be the most integral part.. and four hours at 160k?? That alone would take almost 300 megs of the disc, leaving 500 for 240 minutes of video...about 2 megs per minute...no way =) The video would look like hammered dog sh...eh, not so good

New Temp & GOP

I noticed you updated the templates for the new GOP, but the scene change is still checked...
Should it be checked or unchecked?

8O It shouldn't :!: . I double checked that :!: . Could it be that I'm using TMPEG 2.59 PLUS, and even when I see that "scene change" is OFF, you see it ON :?:
