Illegal foating decimal point calculation order?

When using the KVDCX2 704X480 Template with tmpeg after encoding anywhere from 60%-90% of the film I am frequently getting the following error:

" Illegal foating decimal point calculation order "

If I try encoding again sometimes the error occurs again at the same spot of the film and other times not. Eventually I do get a successful encode but only after multiple tries.

I never had this previously and am at a loss as to why this would be occuring now after having had a number of successes.

The only thing I am now doing different from before is encoding at 29.97 fps ( required for compatibilty for my dvd player ).

Anyone with any ideas as to why this is occuring ( or what typically would cause this ) and what I could do to fix this...

Thanks alot, Jag

Hi Jag,

I don't think anyone seems to know exactly what is causing these "illegal floating decimal point" errors in TMPG at the moment. I'm sure you've followed this thread in the TMPG Forum for any possible solutions? http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2946. I know that I too have had this error occur (only a couple times though), and what I did was just lower the CQ level I was using very slightly (like from 76.8 down to 76.7 for example) and then try again. This worked for me in the few instances it happened. But that certainly isn't the greatest solution I'm sure....nor is it an answer as to why it's happening. My guess is it's probably just "another one of those little TMPG bugs" that you hear about and hafta live with until a new release addresses it.  Good luck.

Thanks dazed&confused.

I'll try lowering the CQ then. Although often I'm as low as 70 when this happens. As I understand its not recommended to go below this.

If I find anything that works consistently for me I'll post my findings...

hi Jag,

just wondering which version of TMPGenc you're using and also if you're using Avisynth which version of that?

thanks,

Hi Rendalunit,

I've been using the latest 2.510 trial version.

I'm a newbie and just been following the KVCDX2 guide exactly as written so no Avisynth...

I just finished a successful encode which had failed earlier today. All I did was run norton disc and windows Dr, restarted my machine and disconnected from the internet and shutdown all background applications like Norton Firewall, Antivirus, ect.

Even though I've had successful encodes even while running very demanding apps at the same time (such as MS Flight Sim 2K2 ) I figure perhaps other background apps. are conflicting or limiting resources that may trigger the problem. I'm only guessing.... I'll continue with this method for the next few encodes and see if it makes a consistent difference.

I've had more problems with 2.510, and would recomend you try the older 2.58 out...

There's a sample script, often times if it fails in 2.510, it works in 2.58... or I just frameserve via vdub. It's worth a shot at least. :)

NyteSkyy, Thanks for the suggestions. :D I'll give those a try as well.

I'm also wondering if there's something upstream, ie DVDencrypter or DVD2AVI, that's causing a problem....

I have made a lot of VCD and get a lot of "Illegal problem" too.

In some cases, only frameserving the .avs with virtualdub to TMPEG solves the mistery, but in some harder cases I have to change the CQ mode to CQ_VBR mode.

Oh, man, this sucks! But if you want to do the vcd and watch in your TV, maybe you must change the mode to CQ_VBR ( the quality is worse than CQ mode, but in the other hand works every time ).

I really doen´t try to lower the quality, maybe this helps. Normally the quality I work is 70~85.

And I tried both the 2.5.10 and 2.5.8 version of TMPEG and the problem appear in both versions, but I use the 2.5.10 because for me this version seems more fast.
