183 min kvcd quality

Hi :)

I'm fairly new to all this, but i managed to make a pearl harbor kvcd. i put 183 mins on 1 cd (i want to save cd's). i used Tok and KVCD-LBR-352x288-_PAL_-PLUS.mcf template.
oh and also the latest optimal script for dvd's and clean material.
k my question is if the quality i get is right for this setup? or can i make it better? tok used cq 41(ish) btw.

sample here: http://users.skynet.be/bk260637/sample.m2v

thanks! :)

Hi zes,

Pearl Harbor is a very long movie, but most of all, it has a LOT of action parts. For example, I did "The Green Mile", which is also a ~180 minute movie, and it looks better than that sample, but the reason is that "The Green Mile" is a drama type of a movie. So the bits are more distributed throughout the movie, and the qualty is better. But your encode will look good on small TVs ( 9" or so), but not on larger TVs. That movie should really go on two CDs. Even the original is on two DVDs :D
However, I would have encoded that in two CDs at 528x480, as that would only be ~90 minutes per CD and the result would be awesome :!:

I think 183 min. in one CD is just too much at 40% CQ your not going to have much to see unless going to watch this on one of those 5" TVs.
to me anything over 2 hrs should go on 2 CDs , i just encoded Catch me if you can (2:20min.) in 2 CDs with this script:

Mpeg2Source("C:\Documents and Settings\Osvaldo\Desktop\DVD\CMIYC.d2v")
LegalClip()
GripCrop(480, 480, overscan=2, source_anamorphic=false)
GripSize(resizer="BicubicResize")
GripBorders()
LegalClip()

with fairly clean sourse, 77% CQ no need 4 any filter other than reziseing Excellent Quality Not to mention only a 5 hr. encode. :D

thanks for the reply

well u know i just wanted to test the more 'extreme' form of compression. i know it doesnt look too good but i do have a small tv and my dvd player does a nice job smoothening the picture. i managed to up to cq by cutting off the credits (which are over 10 minutes with that movie) and setting the prediction to 1.00 instead of 0.99 in tok, which in the end produced a 780mb mpeg2 file. so now quality seems to be maxxed out and i'm satisfied with it :)
good job on those templates and scripts

:!: Can your player play MPEG-1, because if you can, the quality will be WAY better that MPEG-2 on that film
I didn't notice that your sample was MPEG-2 :!: That's why it doesn't look that good. Try the same movie as MPEG-1. You'll be surprised at the result 8)

hey

my player: jvc xv-302s so no, i have to encode in mpeg2 format and burn as svcd :/
why is mpeg1 so much better then? always thought mpeg2 was far better?

Have you tried encoding as MPEG-1, and muxing as SVCD

Not a low bit rates. MPEG-1 wipes out MPEG-2 at low bit rates, at least with all current encoders in the industry
Above ~2,500Kbps, MPEG-2 starts to show it's advantage. Below that, MPEG-1 just shines :!:

cool

i just tried what u ve said muxing mpeg1 as svcd and it works! :) i used a 1 min sample. the image really is alot sharper on my tv. only problem were the glitches but maybe that s because of the cd-rw i used. i will encode the whole movie tonight (prolly on 2 cds) and tell u how it went.
thanks for the tip! ;)

Hi zes,

Yes, CD-RWs are flaky on some players. It happens to me too :)
Let us know, and it would be good if you can post a small .m1v sample to compare against the old MPEG-2 sample

comparison

hello,

i made 2 samples mpeg1/2 and the result is remarkable indeed :)

mpeg1: http://users.skynet.be/bk260637/ph_lbr_mpeg1.m1v
mpeg2: http://users.skynet.be/bk260637/ph_lbr_mpeg2.m2v

also bitrate viewer is very clear about which1 is better:

mpeg1: bitrate: 1436 / q: 0.93
mpeg2: bitrate: 940 / q: 3.20

i have seen the light 8O

It that's the way the MPEG-1 180 minutes looks like on one CD, that's EXCELENT quality for that movie 8) :D

;(

ok i encoded the whole movie mpeg1 and muxed as svcd but tok gave an error. it is however partially muxed so i was able to see the result and it's not working :( the image is 'garbled', has glitches (so it wasnt my cd-rw), it's just not watchable. so now i'm kinda stuck with what to do. is kvcd mpeg2 (with low bitrate) better than regular svcd's? may be a silly question to post on this board :)

Hi zes,

Mux your .m1v and your .mp2 manually with BBMpeg. ToK has some problems muxing sometimes. Do it manually

-kwag

zes 05-17-2003 09:13 AM

succes! :)

Total succes this time! :)

I muxed it manually as svcd without adding svcd scan offsets or 'align sequence headers', put forced mux rate to 0 in bbmpeg (dunno why, must have read that somewhere) and it created the file flawlessly.
then i made an image in vcdeasy for svcd's, ignored the resolution warning ofcourse, added chapters etc.. all without a hitch.
i burned it using nero at 12x speed and it works in my dvd player! :) no glitches or anything, just very good kvcd quality ;), far better than that previous mpeg2 file.

Thanks kwag!

Maybe u can change the dvd compatibility chart for jvc xv-s302?

weird problem

it seems i was a bit over-enthousiast ;/

mpeg1 svcd works for 352*288 (only pal tested), but this player doesnt like 528x576 that much (both pal & ~ntsc templates). higher resolutions i did not test yet. the prob is: it stutters the whole time, but only at that resolution. the LBR template works without a problem. any solution to this? other resolutions i should try? thanks. sorry kwag but the chart isn't completely then correct atm
will get it right

kwag 05-20-2003 05:16 PM

I'll change the chart on "!" for a "X" on 528x

ovg64 05-20-2003 05:20 PM

A lot of people have problems w 528 so changing it to 544x480 has been the solution 4 them.

That's right :!:

zes, did you try 544x576 :?:

-kwag

zes 05-21-2003 02:32 AM

sooo

i ve tested a few resolutions, all mpeg1 muxed as svcd.

doesn't work (stutter): 352x576, 480x576, 528x576, 544x576
works: 352x288, 704x576

to use 528x576 i would have to use the mpeg2 format then, which works fine.

now that chart should be right for this player 8)
