TMPGEnc won't open the files directly for encoding?
I have a problem I need advice on.
I have Spiderman in SVCD MPEG2 in three parts. Problem is it doesn't seem to be standard SVCD somehow. It plays in DVD player and through PowerDVD no problem. I want to convert this using KVCD to one (or two) VCD for a friend that can't play SVCD. Problem is TMPGEnc won't open the files directly for encoding. It thinks they are incompatible format. So I thought no biggie I will use the TMPGEnc Merge/Cut Tool to do a straight copy to standard MPEG2 files. This worked perfectly for the first segment. But with the 2nd and 3rd segments the TMPGEnc tool only does about half of the segment. I tried 3 times and each time it only processed aprox. half the segment. So I decided to try VDub or Media Studio to do conversions. VDub comes up with error MPG Import Filter: pack synchronisation error and wont open it and Media Studio crashes when I try and import. Any ideas? The 3 files are not corrupt as I can copy them and watch the whole movie. Thanks in Advance |
hi,
I just recently converted all my svcds to kvcd with this method: 1. copy the AVESEQ0x.MPG files from each disk with ISOBUSTER and rename them in numerical order AVESEQ01, AVESEQ02.. and so on..in the same directory 2. load the first one into DVD2AVI and save project 3. load .d2v into TMPGenc and encode I ran into all those errors before I used ISOBUSTER because I was doing a straight copy in explorer and it wasn't successful. sorry if this no help to you! ren |
Strange..
Thanks for the tip rendalunit.. didn't seem to help me much in this case though. The file ripped perfectly with isobuster and I can watch it perfectly with PowerDVD but when using the TMPGEnc merge tool it still seems to only see half the file. Part 1 merges fine but 2 and 3 only merge with half the data.
Any other ideas anyone? Anyone know why I can't encode straight from these files with TMPGEnc? Bitrate viewer says they are standard SVCD but TMPGEnc doesn't like them even though I have encoded VCD/SVCD files straight with TMPGEnc before with other movies. Any other tool out there to convert (strange) SVCD files to regular SVCD files that I can try? |
Ignore previous post
Sorry ignore that. I forgot to put it through DVD2AVI. I am trying that method now. Will let you know if it works..

Worked like a treat!!
Thanks rendalunit. :D |
MPEG-2 to KVCD Plus
Hi Rendalunit,
I tried using your method to convert SVCD to KVCD Plus. I obtained a copy of ISOBUSTER and used it to copy each AVSEQ0x.mpg file to my hard drive. Next, I used DVD2AVI to create a .d2v file. Then I created a .avs file using FitCD and finally Tmpgenc to create a KVCD 704X480 Plus. My problem seems to be the files copied by ISOBUSTER dropped frames as it copied. I compared the KVCD to the original SVCD using WinDVD and there are many places where the picture jumps, sometimes several frames at once. I used DVD2AVI preview to reads the AVSEQ0x... files directly and the frames were missing from the copied source. Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong. The re-encode is great except for this problem. :? |
hey black prince,
I recently copied some mpeg2 files with Isobuster and they had errors- but then I hit "extract but FILTER only m2f2 mpeg frames" and that seemed to fix the problem. see if that might work for you- ren |
ISOBUSTER solved
ren, thanks for such a quick response.
I found the same solution and was just getting ready to tell you I solved this problem on my own. Your right, someone on Doom had a similiar problem and reminded anyone using ISOBUSTER to select "Extract filtered Mode 2 Form 2". I just tested the copied file and the frames are there. Next time I'll research first and if I can't find an answer, then ask for help. I have 30+ high quality mpeg-2's I thought couldn't be converted until now. Again Thanks  |
Converting MPEG-2 to MPEG-1
Hi ren,
I thought converting my svcd’s to kvcd plus was finally solved, but I ran into some problems and need some more advice. “The Matrix” is svcd using 4 cd’s ( total 2hrs 17min) I want to reduce this to two KVCD Plus cd’s without quality loss. 1 ) Used dvd2avi to preview statistics of cd files avseq01.mpg It showed Aspect Ratio --> 4 : 3 Frame Rate --> 29.970 fps Video Type --> NTSC Frame Type --> blank 2 ) Copied avseq01.mpg and renamed each using isobuster “extract with filter only M2 F2” to hard drive folder. 3 ) Used dvd2avi to preview statistics of hd avseq0x.mpg files and it showed the same stats as 1). This time the movie was jumpy in spots and a few sequences of frames repeated themselves. 4 ) Tried de-multiplexing using tmpgenc and multiplexing using bbmpeg. This corrected the video problem 100%. 5 ) Using dvd2avi with turned force film off, to created .d2v and .mpa files. 6 ) After step 5) I noticed that the .mpa (audio) was small and discovered that dvd2avi only extracted audio from the first avseq01.mpg. 7 ) Used headac3he to convert this .mpa from step 6) to verify problem. I encoded the entire movie using avisynth with ivtc and Tmpgenc. The video came out perfect. 8) I am still playing with the audio and have run out of ideas. :? I tried extracting .mpa’s from each avseqox.mpg, but don’t know how to concatenate them into one .mpa to convert via headac3he. Also, tried encoding audio via Tmpgenc using .d2v file and it created a .mp2 file showing 2hrs 17min, but there was no sound. :( |
hey black prince,
At this point I would probably suggest loading each mpeg into MEDIATOR and demuxing the audio with that to encode with headac3he. Then multiplex the encoded audio and video with BBMpeg. I haven't tried this yet but it looks like Mediator handles audio problems very well. Also you can convert each mpeg to an AVI in Virtual Dub, append each one and re-encode (if there's enough disk space). Before you do anything though, make sure to get proper advice from Kwag :D |
I made a mistake- you can load the mpg-2 into Mediator and convert to AVI- NOT Vdub. If you convert a 2 hour movie back to avi with the Huffy codec it will be between 30 and 40gb- but hopefully there's an easier way so you won't have to encode the video again! :)

hey black prince,
I think I know how to do this now (I'm still learning  ) I just partially converted "Event Horizon" svcd like this: 1. extract each aveseqx.mpg to hd with Isobuster filtering m2f2 frames 2. load each one into Mediator 3. actions>extract audio to wav I played the wav file in WMP and the whole movie was there so then you'd encode the WAV file with headac3he and mux the MP2 and M1V files with BBMpeg I'm going to try this right now. ren |
converting MPEG-2 to MPEG-1
Thanks Ren,
First time using Mediator, but will give it try!! |
Hi ren,
MPEG Mediator would only extract audio from 1st avseq0x.mpg files together (4 in all), but I was able to extract wav from each. I tried many things, but it came down to creating .d2v files for each avseq0x.mpg with no audio and using Mediator's extracted wav file as input to Tmpgenc. Each encode needed audio sync of -51ms and joined into one file. I used Hjsplit to figure where to cut the final mpg and Tmpgenc to split the file for burning two cd's. The result turned out very good, but the process was crude and timely. If you have discovered a better method, please let me know. Thankx :) |
Finally, I have a process that works well converting SVCD’s to KVCD Plus.
As with any re-encode there is a caveat that I will discuss further on. Let me explain my process and invite anyone to comment. 1 ) Isobuster - copy cd avseq0x.mpg’s to hd using “filtering with M2F2”. 2 ) Tmpgenc – tools --> merge --> avseq0x.mpg’s into one output mpg. 3 ) MPEG Mediator - extract audio (.wav) from merged mpg file. 4 ) Headac3he - convert wav file to mp2. 5 ) Dvd2avi - create .d2v file without audio. 6 ) Avisynth - determine whether to use IVTC or not. 7 ) Tmpgenc - encode video only, using KVCD Plus 704X480 or 352X480. 8 ) bbMPEG - multiplex .m1v (video), .mp2 (audio) and cut. ** Now for that caveat - there is a distinct high pitch ping at the points where the avseq0x.mpg’s were joined. Otherwise audio and video sync are perfect and quality is as good and sometimes better than the original svcd. If some knows how to remove or lessen this sound at each join please share. |
hey black prince,
I have not had very good luck with TMPGEnc "merge" tool. This is from the TMPGEnc website: Quote:

Hey ren,
I loaded the 4 files copied by Isobuster into Mediator and viewed the movie with the slide. No problem. But when I tried to extract the audio from them Mediator quit after the first avseq01.mpg. I tried several progies to merge the isobuster copied files. Mpeg2VCR 3.0 copied them but, at the join points it dropped several frames. Tmpgenc 12a was no better than Tmpgenc Plus 2.56. They both produced a high pitched sound for 2 or 3 frames at the join points. I double checked the original avseq0x.mpg's and found no such sound. There doesn't seem to be a good tool for merging mpeg2 files. Tmpgenc came the closest to solving this problem. I've had these svcd's for some time, so I'll just wait till some solution comes along that can solve this last problem. 8) |
Hi ren,
I may have solved my own problem converting svcd to kvcd plus. I reviewed my process and found using tmpgenc to merge svcd's was causing audio sync. Here's what was changed and I have re-encoded 4 svcd movies with great success. 1) isobuster --> copy each CD mpeg avseq0x.mpg "filter with m2f2" 2) mpeg mediator --> extract audio (wav) from each avseq0x.mpg 3) dvd2avi --> create .d2v video only for each avseq0x.mpg 3a) FitCD --> create .avs based on one .d2v used in (4 4) avisynth --> join each .d2v and .wav LoadPlugin("E:\DVD Backup\2 - DVD2SVCD\MPEG2Dec\MPEG2DEC2.dll") # video=mpeg2source("D:\Temp\avseq01.d2v") audio=AVISource("D:\Temp\avseq01.wav") clip1=AudioDub(video,audio) # video2=mpeg2source("D:\Temp\avseq02.d2v") audio2=AVISource("D:\Temp\avseq02.wav") clip2=AudioDub(video2,audio2) # video3=mpeg2source("D:\Temp\avseq03.d2v") audio3=AVISource("D:\Temp\avseq03.wav") clip3=AudioDub(video3,audio3) # unalignedsplice(clip1,clip2,clip3) # BicubicResize(704,480,0,0.6,0,0,480,480) #TemporalSmoother(2,1) AddBorders(0,0,0,0) 5) tmpgenc --> create only audio (mp2) using .avs 6) tmpgenc --> create only video (m1v) using .avs 7) bbMPEG --> multiplex and split x) Nero --> Burn, baby burn :) :) :) |
hey black prince,
That's a hell of a good idea! I never thought about joining videos clips with avisynth and especially audio! I wonder if Virtual Dub can join the .d2v's also with the VFAPI reader. ren |
Hi ren,
Just created total movie wav file via VirtualDub using avs with joined video and audio. Finished the audio using Headac3he. This is much better than using Tmpgenc to create mp2 file. Tmpgenc's audio encode has a tinny sound at 128khz, where as Headac3he doesn't. 8) |
