Avisynth is fast and there are filters for it that tmpgenc doesn't have. The encoding is slow as it is- I don't want to slow it down anymore with resize, smoother, etc. The extra step with fitcd, avisynth only takes about 1 extra minute :)

When I tried to test resize directly in TMPGenc I got either messed up video or HUGE letter box video tests. Source is 16:9 30fps. Used the KVCD-CQ-352x480-_NTSCFilm_-BETA.mcf. BTW, the betas rock!!!!

TMPGenc Source tests: (Output on all set at 4:3)
1:1 Center Keep = messed up
1:1 Full Keep = HUGE letter box

16:9 Center Keep = messed up
16:9 Full Keep = HUGE letter box

4:3 Center Keep = messed up
4:3 Full Keep = HUGE letter box

What did I do wrong?

See! Now I know why you are the pro! :D

What I do not understand is how a 720x480 16:9 DVD rip formats properly into 352x352 :?:

Use FitCD to open your .d2v, and you'll see that if you select the target as 352x480 (1/2 DVD), the resize options selected will be 352x352.
The line will look something like this: BilinearResize(352,352,0,0,720,480)

Well, actually it states:

IF Anamorphic is checked BilinearResize(320,320,0,0,720,480)
Anamorphic NOT checked BilinearResize(320,448,17,0,686,480)

Now what? :?: :?: :?: :?:

320x320 8O
I think you have the "blocks overscan" set to 1 or 2. It has to be set to 0.
This is in FitCD.

Aha!. And that's a 3 hour movie!. The perfect template for "Pearl Harbor" would have been the KVCD 352x480 Plus. Because it would fit perfectly in 2 CD's. 8)

I looked at 128 kbps and it iddn't make that much of a difference to get it on 1 disc. This stinks b/c now it'll take 4 discs. (B/c the original file i got was 2 files.)

BTW, my webspace is being gay so I can't give you that demo of it Kwag. :(

Another thing I noticed was when I sent it through TMPEG it got darker than the original video.

Oh, well, things to ponder.

P.S. I encoded a few things on the VBR_CQ setting and it looked great but with LOTR I noticed a huge quality difference. Also remember that LOTR has a lot of fast motion scenes.

in regards to the video brightness you can easily correct this in tmpgenc, and I got the lotr dvd screener and that spans over 4 80 mins discs.
