Ideas on encoding Lord of the Rings?
Anyone have any ideas on if we are going to be able to fit a 3+ hour film on 2 cd's?
Kwag, I'll bet you've already been thinking about it. -Yoda |

I'm sure it'll easily fit with the 352x480 template! I just did Apocalypse Now (original, 153min)--->913.633mb (video only). Now I'm gonna do "Pearl Harbor" with the 352x480 I think that's a 3hr movie.

Was "Apocalypse Now" done with the 704x480 or the 352x480? Let me know the size of "Peral Harbor" 8) -kwag |
hi Kwag,
I did "apocalypse now" with the 352x480beta temp. The picture quality is amazing! I encoded the audio at the max kbps and I still had room for the credits and an "extra" (destruction of the compound). I can't really tell the difference between the two templates on my tv- is it very noticeable on an HDTV? Also, are you going to update the KDVD templates, or make beta-dvd compliant templates? I'll let you know the final size of Pearl Harbor :) thanks ren |
My experience on LOTR
I just encoded the first half (1h30m) of LOTR with 704x480 KVCDx2 beta. (But I changed to CQ and put it on 70) The total file size was 950 megs. Also I put audio to 224 kbps. I looked at 128 kbps and it iddn't make that much of a difference to get it on 1 disc. This stinks b/c now it'll take 4 discs. (B/c the original file i got was 2 files.)
BTW, my webspace is being gay so I can't give you that demo of it Kwag. :( Another thing I noticed was when I sent it through TMPEG it got darker than the original video. Oh, well, things to ponder. P.S. I encoded a few things on the VBR_CQ setting and it looked great but with LOTR I noticed a huge quality difference. Also remember that LOTR has a lot of fast motion scenes. -Twobit326 |

The betas are no more betas! Just about everyone's feedback has been so good, that I'm taking off the "BETA" name, and posting them officially. If anyone wants to tweak them, go ahead, but the current settings have given the best results for a good balance between video/size. I'll update the download page later tonight. The mpegs created with the 352x480 template are not as sharp, if you watch on a HDTV. On any other TV, even large CRT's that are not HDTV's, there's no visual difference. -kwag |
Kwag,
So in your opinion, unless you use the 704x480 template you'll not be happy viewing on hdtv. This is something to consider since it will be a while before I get hdtv. I like getting a full movie on one cd but when I want quality I usually go to two cds with the cq upped. I think I'll encode to the 704x480 for the important movies for the eventual hdtv. By the way, looking forward to the results of YOUR LOTR encode. Also, I think you have defined the templates enough that we can talk about the tweaks, encode times, filesizes for the specific movies that range from 2 hours and up. Or, converse on lengths, cuts from beginning to end, templates used, etc. and let others have the details. I know you're as happy as a pig in mud that you've solved the template issue so now we can get in to specific movies. What do you think? -Yoda |

And yes, I'm happy as a pig  -kwag |
Well, all of you are lucky guys. To share your feelings/happyness, either I have to buy a new DVD player or someone should solve template problems with players like the one I have APEX AD-660.
Help us. BTW, new templates @ 352x240 works very well. |

I thought we had "Lord of the Rings", and it's actually "Harry Potter" Sorry  -kwag |

The problem is not template related. It's MPEG-1 VBR. Almost every Apex model has some kind of problems with VBR. Hopefully APEX "Hello APEX, are you reading this?" will read some of the user posts, and do something to their firmwares. -kwag |
Sorry for the impression.
But it plays 352x240 MPEG-1 VBR very well. Infact, before BETA Templates all old versions used to hang the player. Now non of the BETA templates are making it to hang  but that short video skip is only the problem. I am searching the net for solution. I am also trying all other MPEG-2 options. Thanks a lot |
here's my video file size of "pearl harbor" (183min) with 352x480 template-
disc 1- 914,084kb disc 2- 355,465kb total- 1,269,549kb (1,270 mb) - that leaves 330mb for audio, should be enough I don't think this movie would fit on 2 cds with the 704x480 template |

But remember that the total capacity for two CD's is 1.6GB. And your complete movie is 1.269GB. So you did it  It will fit in 2 CD's with audio probably at 224Khz or 192Khz. And still room to spare   -kwag |
apex's
\ I know what Apex has its own site and most of the apex 1500's are flashable, but on the apex site you can request certain features for consideration of firmware upgrades... :)
tks |
Actually someone sent me this link a couple of days ago:
Posted: 2002-06-14 08:03 did you hear apex is actually making kvcd a standard? there are even firmware patches for older players.. http://www.vidomi.com/viewtopic.php?topic=2951&forum=6 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O But the link provided in the article is down, so I don't know if it's true. -kwag |

Say the Source is 4:3, output should be what :?: |
I resize the 4:3 or 16:9 movie down to 352x480 with FitCD & Avisynth then load the .avs file into TMPGenc. Then in settings/advanced/source aspect ratio- 1:1 VGA , video arrange method- full screen (keep aspect ratio). Then in video stream settings/aspect ratio- 4:3 525 line NTSC. These settings work for me.
