little sound problems
 

THANKS A LOT for your amazing templates!
I was able to put more than an hour of 'Spygame' and
'A Beautiful Mind' per 80'CD.

The quality of the video is like DVD to me.
I was really surprised of the results. Thanks again.

I used the KVCDx2-CQ-704x576 pal beta, lowering the video quality
to 12.

I only have a little problem: on my standalone only
(and not in the pc) once in a while the sound has some micro-interruptions.

I tried to put the audio bitrate to 160 without improvement.

Can somebody give me some hints?

The 'tools'I use are:

- SmartRipper 2.41
- DVD2AVI 1.76+
- TMPGEnc Plus 2.56
- Nero 5.5.9

The standalone DVD Player that seems doesn't like
the soundtracks is a Grundig GDV 130.

Hi ale:

Try to encode a small sample, but increase the MIN bit rate to 600Kbps. Some DVD players cough on audio when the video bit rate drops too low.
Just give that a try.

increasing the min bit rate to 600 kbps but the audio
again has some coughs when played on the Grundig GDV130

try to demux the video file with TMPGEnc and see if the output WAVE file has coughs too. maybe it's the source.

so I think it's a problem of my Grundig GDV130 to play correctly the

Hi ale, for the hell of it, encode a small one minute clip with a MIN of 1,000Kbps. See if it works. I still think it's a problem with the MIN bit rate. If it does work, start encoding some clips in steps of -50 from MAX point until it coughs again. Try to use a clip of very low or very dark scene, so that the bit rate stays around the min. If that doesn't work, then it could be a problem with the MAX bit rate. Then drop the MIN to 300 again, and change the MAX to 1,150Kbps and choose a fast action clip for the test, to keep the bit rate saturated and peaking at MAX. If that doesn't choke, start increasing the MAX in steps of 50 until it chokes again. The problem has to be in the MIN or MAX. If this doesn't work, well :cry: then your DVD player just doesn't like MPEG-1 VBR.

I'll be back at home next week and i will follow
your hints. I'm coming to believe that it could be
a matter of MAX bitrate, because the interruptions
on soundtrack happen when a fast action is on.
BTW your advices are very clear and sharp, like the video
of your templates :)

Back at home, I've tried with 1000Kbps as min bitrate and
NO coughs! :)
Now I will try to go down by 50 steps to see when my Grundig gives up.

sorry JcF, I'm back home from my holiday just now.

Well, I burned with nero a VCD containing the same trail
encoded with a min bitrate of 600, 700, 800, 900 as well
as the originally successull 1,000Kbps....
all of them now have coughs!! :cry:

I have to say that the coughs are different everytime the
clips are played on the standalone, I mean sometime
they happens more often and sometime less.

My next moves will be to play a little with the MAX bit rate,
as suggested by kwag.
Then I'll try to burn on a CD rather than a CD-RW.

If this will not work I think I'll have to replace my Grundig GDV130
with a different standalone; someone has hints for a cheap but good
(KVCD compatible :wink: ) one available here in europe?

I tried lowering the max bitrate without
success, then I went back to the standard
300-2300 kbits/sec and changed the audio
sampling frequency at 48kHz and it works
with no coughs.
This time I burned and played the clip more and
more times and encoded with different video quality
just to be sure.

Is there some technical explaination of this, kwag?

Now, with the quality of your template, my DVD burner
seems almost unuseful! :?

The answer is: I don't know, this is 8O WEIRD 8O :lol: , but what you did, might be the solution to many other DVD players that have problems with non-standard MPEG-1 streams, such as KVCD's. :wink:
Maybe the Grundig likes a higher audio sampling stream, and that way there are no hickups.
Just keep your audio encoded from now on at 48Khz.

Try also the vbv buffer size. I found that if I use something else than 40, my dvd also has bad sound.

You will have to test vbv, minimun and maximum bitrate to find the best values for your dvd player.

It's better to waste two oners that doing vcd that you will not be able to wacht in your dvd, isn't it? :roll:

I have tested different values for the minimum and maximum bitrate
but never changed the vbv buffer size from 40 as I found on the kwag KVCDx2-CQ-704x576-_PAL_-BETA.mcf.
I solved the sound problems on my Grundig rising the audio sampling frequency from 44.1 kHz to 48kHz.
Now I have a template that gives about an hour per CD of near DVD
video quality and a good stereo sound, a result that only a month ago
seemed to me not achievable.
Now I'm eager of testing kwag's new Plus templates he released yesterday! :D
I want also try to use the lower resolution KVCD-CQ-352x576-_PAL_-PLUS.mcf with the DC10-captured VHS I have.
