Linux/FreeBSD Guide
 

Here's the suggestion. I am using FreeBSD at home (byebye windowz) and (m)encoding is done at blinding speeds. I would like to see some sort of guide or at least faq's on this topic. How to do ripping, encoding, muxing, and burning. There are tons of softwarez for doing it, but seems to me noone is interested. Am I alone? :roll:

You are not alone :D
I also use FreeBSD, and encoding is also faster with mencoder under FreeBSD than in Windows or Linux.
Have you tried the Linux version of MencodeME under FreeBSD :?:
I haven't, because currently my BSD setup is text mde only, using it as a server/firewall.
I think next week I'll CVS update my old FreeBSD Workstation disk (version 4.0) to the current 5.2.1, and then I'll try MencodeME on BSD :)
As a matter of fact, one of the reasons I was still using Windows was because of Skype, for voice communications.
FreeBSD includes the TeamSpeak client, so if I'm able to install that and run it, I'll finally get rid of my WinXP :!:
I'll just backup all my e-mails from Mozilla Thunderbird on Windows, and transfer them to BSD, and the same with my Firefox bookmarks.

For DVD related tools in FreeBSD, change directory to /usr/ports and then type make search key=dvd
(You must have installed the ports collection for this to work)

I'm also going to try BSD in a few days.
Still waiting to download the 1st CD (already have the 2nd...)
I'll run it on a Pentium200MMX with 64MB Ram and a 6GB Harddisk.
I'll have to cut a small 5 minutes movie sample and run some tests on it as that PC will be my Router/Firewall.
Hope BSD is not too dificult to install and configure.
Else I'll have to bug you guys a bit for some help ;-)

PS-If you need some info on other tools used under linux, check the KVCD forum and look for mekoder thread by russiansexpat.
He wrote a script known to be working pretty good.
I don't know if it will be handy as it is for Linux...

I recently updated my FreeBSD to 5.2.1 Current and have some hardware issues, so I was doing some tweaking and messed up my system :)
. So it is not a guarantee that it is not going to work for you.
I am planning to switch to 4.10 Stable (released yesterday) hoping that things would be better.
Then I'll give you full report :wink:

Comparing to commercial distros (SuSE, Mandrake, RH) it is, let's say, different :wink:

But comparing to other it is not that difficult. BTW most of the linux programs I have tried worked for me. FreeBSD is probably the most stable (in its Stable branch) version of OS today. Powerfull MacOSX was built on BSD basis! It is fast and reliable. What else do you need from OS?

I'm going to download it today. This will probably help with the TeamSpeak Server, which doesn't run on 5.x release.

I'm using my FreeBSD as a router/gateway/firewall and Wireless access point. ( Yes, FreeBSD works as an Access Point with a plain PCI wireless card, so I don't need any other hardware access points like D-Link, LynkSYS, etc. )
FreeBSD version 4.x doesn't support my PCI Wireless card (D-Link DWL-G20), and it is supported on my current installation, which is version 5.2.1.
So I'll stick to FreeBSD 5.2.1, and I'll wait for a future update on TeamSpeak server :)

BTW Karl, what exactly was the problem with TeamSpeak under FreeBSD?
Not that the win32 version isn't doing it's job but that way you could use that PC for other tasks right?

The Linux version doesn't run correctly on 5.x, but it does work fine on FreeBSD 4.x.Exactly :)
I can only leave my Server/Firewall running, which would also be running the TeamSpeak server. Right now, I have to keep both my server and my XP workstation on all the time :roll:
